Matrox PCI graphics card not working in PCI slot of Dock II

I can't get a Matrox P650 graphics card to work in the PCI slot of a Dock II with my T42. Plug in the card, switch system on, and blank monitor screens - no signal going to monitors. Can boot my T42 undocked, then hot plug it into the Dock, and the device manager sees the card, but claims it can't use it because of a device driver conflict. Rebooting at this point does not help. Is this a problem with the Dock II? I have other intermittent problems with other graphics cards - some work, albeit with problems, some don't. Just not sure if I should venture out and buy another Dock II just on the offchance that this one is faulty. Any way of testing it??
