Keyboard swap & installation T42

#1 Post by equinoxe » Wed Nov 15, 2006 9:33 am

I have a T42 laptop of which some keys of the keyboard do not work as they should. Called IBM (laptop still under warranty) and they are going to send me a brandnew keyboard.
Is there somewhere a description on how to replace this keyboard please ? Which screws I have to untighten, how to remove the keyboard ?
Many thanks for a helping hand !

1.ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p Hardware Maintenance Manual (February 2006)

2.ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p Videos of Hardware removal and installation

Before you replace the keyboard, check the control panel and see if you set the key map properly. Sometimes, it is a software setting problem rather than a hardware failure.
Control Panel->Regional and Language Options->Languages->Details->Settings->Installed Services ...

Also, there are keyboard icons next to the screws that need to be removed (on the bottom of the machine).

Many of the forum members can perform this swap in under 60 seconds. Take your time the first time!

Can a US keyboard be installed in a UK Thinkpad T43? If so, I could have saved myself a whole load of bother recently importing a US model into the UK!

Make certain to use a precision Phillips screwdriver -- removing one of those recessed screws after its head is stripped by a bad screwdriver is not something you want to try ...
