How do i get SD card reader in my t40?

I never use the pcimcia slot on the left side.
What can i get to put in this slot?
cardreader for SD and other cards?
or are there any other uses for this slot?

I have wireless and blutooth built in the T40

you can buy pcmcia readers that supports CF cards, other than that, there are data collection cards and other cards that turns your laptop to a piece of lab equipment

I believe I've read about an extra battery that fits in that slot -Not quite sure though

SD or CF card reader works well if you use a digital camera a lot. Or you could use such a reader (make sure it's a CardBus one!) with Vista's ReadyBoost feature to improve performance (assuming you plan to be running Vista).

That would be the UltraBay.

Sometimes I plug in a USB PCMCIA card to get two more USB ports.

You can also get a firewire card to stick in there, or an extra ethernet port if yours ever screws up.

Caution: this particular one is PCMCIA, not CardBus, so the data transfer speeds will not be particularly good. To match (and exceed) USB2 speeds, you really need CardBus.

Okay...but if I want to use the pcmcia slot, this product is okay??
I sometimes just need the card reader, and my pcmcia I don't use, so it was a easy way to get use of it, and I then don't have to go around with an extern cardreader.

I would like to have so little extra equipment with me as I can.

OR do you mean that I can buy a reader to the pcmcia port, that use cardbus????

Soory..but I don't know the diff. between pcmcia and cardbus.

CardBus is essentially the 32-bit version of PCMCIA (which is 16-bit). Maximum (theoretical!) speed increased from 20 MB/s to 133 MB/s. In practice speeds are much lower by CardBus is easily at least 4x as fast.

There are some relatively inexpensive multi-card CardBus readers available on eBay ...

Okat cardbus is 4 times faster???

At the moment i use SD,SD mini, SD micro, MMC and if it's possible SIM card for mobile phone.

But it would be nice if it could read others....

Yes, CardBus is much faster. But it's more expensive, and that's why most of the low-cost adapters (which may support 10+ card types) are not CardBus. So you may need to make a choice between performance and flexibility ...

In spite of the eBay item description, that's a plain old PCMCIA card, not CardBus. Take a look at the link I posted, and you will see the physical difference in the cards -- that's the easy way to spot a CardBus card.

I'm looking for one that can take SD,SD mini, SD micro.

maybe MMC or memory stick/pro.

It should fit in the pcmcia and not stick out of the frame.

As I can read cardbus is faster, so that would be fine

Are there any cards that I have missed...?

Most card readers won't take a mini or microSD- it'll only take a normal SD card. However, as you're probably aware, both of the smaller SD"s have adapters that make them the size of the normal SD.

I know cardbus is faster. I was not aware that cardbus and CF media support ReadyBoost. Is this verified?

It was mentioned that the CardBus spec is faster than PCMCIA. I was going with the understanding that PCMCIA was 16 bit and CardBus was 32-bit, but other than that they are the same. They use the same formfactor and interconnects. Kinda like USB 1.1 and 2.0. Same port (physically) just different transfer rates for what is plugged in.

I was also under the assumption that Microsoft had no plans to support PCMCIA / Cardbus readers for the ReadyBoost feature. If this is NOT true, then that would just be way cool. I like the idea of ReadyBoost. I think it's perfect for laptops. However I don't want a USB drive sticking out of my computer all the time. So a PCMCIA / Cardbus solution would be neat and clean.

I contacted Delkin and they said that this card will work with ReadyBoost as long as you have 32Bit Vista. The SD cards do not fit flush into the device, so i was wondering if anyone has any pictures of this adapter (with SDcard inserted) on a thinkpad...
