Free recovery cd?

#1 Post by lvlolvlo » Tue Aug 31, 2004 5:01 pm

People, as well as I, on this forum have been complaining about the obscene amount of money IBm charges for Recovery CD's if not ordered within 30 days of notebook purchase. However, fear not for I have a solution. Take note though this solution is not for everyone, only for those with a hard drive problem.

Recently my Thinkpad T40 has had it's share of hard drive problems, meaning weird noises, sudden locks, etc.. So I called up IBM and told them about this, they sent me out another hard drive when it arrived it was in the metal hard drive bracket, all I did was pull out my old one put the handle on the new one and insert it into my Thinkpad. When I booted up NO OS found! I was enraged! I called IBM and told them I rec'd the hd but no OS, what do I do?? The guy was very nice, we talked exchaged weather and some general life information, and at the end of the conversation I had a recovery cd's comming to me. :D

So if you're hard drive is dying, and you don't have recovery cds now is your golden moment of oppertunity. Hopefully IBM won't learn from this mistake and start imaging the drives b4 shipping them out.

Well hope this helps those who have a bad hd and no recovery cd's which is causing you to delay you upgrade to a newer hd.

Recovery CD's

You don't require the Recovery CDs if you performed the following before your harddisk failure:

1. Back up the predesktop area to another storage device as discussed earlier on this forum. Reinstall the predesktop area to your new harddrive and do a recovery to the default installation from the predesktop area. Reinstall all the updated drivers, applications and data.

2. You regularly backup your harddisk. Reinstall the predesktop area (optional). Restore the backup. Now your system is in the original state of the last backup and you would have saved the time to reinstall all the updated drivers and applications and avoided any significant data loss.

I think the value of the time saved and data recovered would more than offset the money spent on the recovery CDs.

I'm sorry I forgot to emphasize the fact that they aren't charging me for a set of Recovery CD's.

I guess I don't understand the big [censored] deal over recovery CDs....it's already on your harddrive. If the 5 gigabytes it uses is that big of a deal, you probably should have gotten a bigger harddrive when you bought the thing!

Well, if your hard drive crashes out of warranty, or you want to install a larger/faster drive, you'll need the recovery CDs.
