heads up: ebay scammer

#1 Post by mpease » Tue Aug 31, 2004 8:44 pm

Hello --

I was close to putting an order in with this guy... he had listed several T42 models at bargain rates... saying that he could get these prices through is rep & that he'd charge just $75 for the service. The price was $1329 for a base T42 / 512 / 40G / 14.1" machine. After doing some research on what he was offering... spending an hour or so combing the net... it turns out that he was offerring the Harvard student discount price....

Somehow he was able to get the harvard price & was going to let anyone who paid him $75 via ebay to do it... I asked him about this & pooof the ebay listing vanished. literally overnight.

Pete Caron <pete@consultierge.com> was the guys address.

So... just to let you all know. Dooof! ts amazing how I'm willing to believe that such a low price is possible.

Sorry, but what exactly is the scam here? Presumably he or his "rep" is affiliated with Harvard in some capacity; if he's violating the terms of the contract of sale, that would seem to be Harvard's quarrel with him or his rep, not with you.

Or do you have information that indicates that he had no intention of delivering the laptop?

maybe its a scam & maybe not...

first of all... he didn't say anything on the ebay posting about these being havard deals. & he was sure not to mention the model numbers (havard deals have special model numbers)

second, he was so quick to reply to emails yesterday when i was showing interest. now that I've asked him if he is indeed selling harvard machines, he: closed the ebay auction & hasn't replied to any of my emails (over 24 hours since his last reply). My emails were not accusatory, I just asked him if he were selling harvard machines...

Maybe his grandmother got sick & he had to close shop. I just wanted to give you all a heads up.

Here are some potential problems:

1) I think the EUA for 2373/2374 (edu) machines states that they cannot be resold. If they are, IBM can and will deny warranty claims.

2) If he takes your money and orders the machine in your name, IBM may come after you when they audit their purchases. Yeah they might not collect on you, but there goes your warranty for sure, and it's a hassle.

It's really easy to get a great deal legitimately through our very own Mr. Bill of this forum. I got a great deal, had trouble with one stuck pixle, Bill took it back and ordered me a new one no questions asked!

Again folks, great price, great service! :D

Bill's wife was in a serious car accident a few weeks ago (she'll be fine), he's gotten behind on his e-mail I don't doubt.
