My T41 is on 24/7 except for when i am taking it somewhere. This is mostly out of convenience. About a month ago I started running folding@home (distributed computing app that they 'fold' protiens in order to come up with cures for various diseases...IE cancer, Alzheimer's...etc.)
anyways I used NHC to undervolt my CPU and force it to clock to 1ghz. The CPU runs in the mid 40's and seems to do a pretty good job at getting the simulations done in a short amount of time despite the lower clock speed. The fan runs at its lower speed a little more often than it did before, but it still cycles on and off as it did before. In other words the computer is still running cool and should last a long time while it does something useful.
Anyways my problem is that I would like to continue running the folding program at this clock speed but allow other higher priority programs such as firefox use the CPUs full potential beyond 1Ghz if they need it. I mean i did after all i did pay for a 1.6Ghz processor...not that it performs poorly at 1Ghz for most stuff.
So far I have tried throttling the folding program down to 50% processor usage while clocking at 1.6ghz but the heat difference is significant for the different clocks and the fan runs at a higher speed which is annoying
ideally some way to force low priority programs such as folding to run at 1Ghz and programs with a 'normal' priority to use that 1ghz and more if they need would be ideal. In other words normal programs can use all 1.6GHz forcing the low priority out... Any ideas?
here is the folding@home website for curious minds
