annoying hdd noise... problem?

#1 Post by zaku » Sat Nov 18, 2006 12:53 pm

i've got a 40G hitachi hdd on my t42.
the laptop often comes out with this annoying small "tic tic tic..." sound (about 5 tics per second) continuously for like at least 5 seconds each time. anyone know what's the problem to that? bad sectors in the hdd or something? it comes out now more and more which gets very annoying in a quiet place.

I bought a brand new 7K100 from eBay and I've the same problem you say. Even with a fresh install of Windows XP the tick drives me nuts.

My original T42 HDD Hitachi 5K80 made that annoying ticking noise when XP is idle. Upgrading firmware didn't help.

IBM replaced it with a 5K100 which doesn't tick at all.

Maybe with a firmware update the tick could go away ??

yea that noise is very annoying... making me want to smash that hdd.
i think sugo said that the firmware upgrade didn't helpd to take that noise away...
so if the laptop is still under warranty they will replace u for free?

Yes. Lenovo should be willing to send you another drive for free if you complain logically and persistently.

If I were you I might consider asking for a Fujitsu drive. If 7K100 is doing the ticking thing then it seems like it's a lucky draw on whether you get noise from an Hitachi. The FRUs are listed here:
