DHCP server not responding

#1 Post by spoon » Wed Sep 01, 2004 2:06 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm having a serious connection problem with my T42 2378fvu. When I try to connect to the network, through ethernet or wireless, i get the message in the diagnosis tool of the IBM access connections

"DHCP server not responding"
Erro code: 0.96
.....

It's not a problem of the network, because I can connect witout any problem in linux. It's a problem of windows XP (I'm using SP1). I dont' understand what happens, because all worked fine yesterday, and I've not make anything strange.

Please, do you know what's going on? I'd appreciate your help.

Regards

Look at your settings including (especially) any firewall settings. In the same way that it is not a Linux problem, it is absolutely not an XP problem. At any service pack level from oldest to newest, there is no Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro problem with respect to DHCP. It is also not an Access Connections problem for any version 2.7 or newer.

You could have a corruption problem. I hate that answer because it rarely happens to me or anyone I know, but it could happen. Repair or reinstall TCP/IP and uninstall/reinstall Access Connections. I assume your Linux is on the same machine so that the physical NIC is OK.

Hi JDHurst,
yes, linux is on another partition of the same machine. If the problem is not XP I have not idea what is going on. The firewall settings were the first thing I thought, then I decided to remove the sygate firewall from the laptop, and the windows firewall is not set. It's true that I observed that at the same time I had this problem the sygate firewall left working. But now is removed.

As for unistall/install TCP/IP, I am a little reluctant, because I have only the Recovery CD's from IBM and is not clear to me how to install something hidden in one of the 6-7 Recovery CD's. If I make a mistake I will be lost, because I deleted the recovery partition and right now I have not a backup of the laptop.

By copy-paste the values of the IP, subnet mask, and DNS server of linux in a session of IBM Access Connection I got to connect the laptop to the network, according the Connection Status of IBM Access Connection. However ping does not work, browser does not work, I can't communicate with other computers, with nothing. All that is beeing very puzzling.

Thanks so much.

If Linux is on a separate partition, then it is not running when you run Windows, so I am a little confused over your statement: copy and paste IP's and so on from Linux into Access Connections. The post title says you are trying to do DHCP.

Try this:
1. Forget Linux for the moment.
2. Uninstall Access Connections (you can easily re-install it).
3. Verify Sygate is uninstalled. Read through Add-Remove programs and make sure. There are at least 4 uninstalls to do when removing Norton Internet Security.
4. Verify the Window Firewall is off, especially if you recently went to SP2.
5. Look at Q810606 and see if anything there applies.
6. Go to the TCP/IP properties and set IP and DNS for Automatic. Also make sure there are no other settings in TCP/IP advanced.
7. Restart and check.

Well I like Sygate as a firewall choice, so I applaud you for that choice. In the options for the Syagte firewall there is an option for Smart DHCP make sure that's checked. Basically, that allows DHCP traffic to pass through the firewall weather or not Sygate has been started.

If you want a cop-out tech support answer "use system restore" lol.

thanks so much for your help!
Finally the problem was more serious, a virus, an adware program.. I don't know, corrupted something in the system. After many tries and fails, and many hours of googling I found in a forum a mention to the program winsockXPfix that fixed my problem.

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/WinsockXPFix.exe

Now I'm glad but I lost much time fixing it.
As for the Sygate, I use that because it doesn't ask me a question each 30 seconds. It does what is expected without hassles.

Regards. Santiago
