Upgrading T43 CPU and Thermal Grease

#1 Post by csw05 » Tue Nov 21, 2006 12:01 am

Hi All
Am about to purchase a low spec T43 with a few questions.

1. Has anyone on the forum upgraded their T43 CPU who could give me a run down on their experience?

2. Is their any problems with using Artic Silver on the CPU?

3. Does the heatsink come in contact with the x300 GPU. If so do I also need to apply Artic Silver?

4. Any further details I need to know.

I have built many PC's so working with components is no problem just have never worked on a T43?

Any help appreciated!!

Cheers csw05

1. No, I've only replaced the TIM on both CPU/GPU with Zalman Super Thermal Grease 1

2. None, applied correctly though

3. Yes, it should. Most long T4x heatsinks have a pink film making contact with the GPU, I removed it when the thermal goop was replaced.

4. Check these topics:

There's a topic talking about how to improve heat conductivity on your T43:

and another guide applying AS5:

Maybe you could share with us your laptop temperatures before/after making the change on Thermal Compound using
TP FanControl amazing piece of software

And welcome to thinkpads.com Forums :D

Yeah sure ill document my temps. I haven't purchased the laptop yet but intend to do so in the next few days. For anyone in Australia Lenovo is running the T43 out at Au $1111 brand new in their clearance centre. I’m lucky enough to get a further employee discount so its an offer I cant refuse.

Cheers csw05

P.S. thanks for the warm welcome!!

I thought this was funny when I read the initial precautions:

1. Don't put it in your mouth.
2. Don't give it to children, or leave it where children can get a hold of it.
3. Keep it away from pets.

Great article: http://www.antec.com/pdf/article/info_DIYArticle2.html

From AMD: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content ... 5-high.wmv

The AMD video states that thermal grease is not recommended for long term applications. Had not heard that before.
