T43p - Multiburner dying?

#1 Post by tomkit66 » Tue Nov 21, 2006 3:52 am

Hi,

Since a few weeks the Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-822S for my T43p does work only occasionally.

I can still install software from CD´s but burning CD´s has a 50:50 chance and burning DVD´s is impossible. I get all kind of error messages, like "no media in the burner detected", "wrong media detected", "broken media detected" etc.

I even bought the latest Nero 7 Premium Reloaded because I thought it might be my old version of Nero causing problems.

I used the Search function here on this forum and also did a google search. Well, it seems that there are no firmware updates for the drive available which is especially sad since problems with the drive are quite common.

So what to do? I have a 3 year on-site warranty upgrade. Should I give IBM a call and let them come, or should I just insist that they send me a new drive?

Generally I think it´s a shame that IBM adds such a piece of crap in a EUR 3,500 notebook.

Cheers
Tom

I usually get on the phone right away when I still have warranty left, if you have on site tell them to bring a drive, or call and you could probably get one shipped overnight. I've never had any problems with tech support here in the US.

Okay thanks !

Hopefully IBM´s support will be as good here in Austria, I never had to deal with them before, so we´ll see ;-)

Thanks again
Tom

Exactly the same problems here with the same multiburner (UJ-822S) in my t42p; It often doesn't even read cd's / dvd's I burned with it.
But.....no warranty left :(

Any suggestions on what I can do?

If you can't read media that you recently burned yourself with the drive, then there is a pretty serious problem that should be covered by the warranty and IBM will probably replace it. Are there any other anomalous sounds that are heard when running the drive like constant stuttering of the head?

Seems to me as if that kind of optical drive failure was present from the beginning and rules out any damage that could have possibly been encountered from sub-standard optical media or crud on the bottom of the disks.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

both my drives have problems reading dvds with constant stuttering, and have done so always.
