T4x memory bus speed (???)

#1 Post by sktn77a » Fri Nov 24, 2006 1:32 pm

My memory (!) is failing me and I'm trying to figure out possible memory upgrade combinations for my three T4x computers.

Right now, I have a T40 (2x256, 400MHz)
T41 (1x512, 533?MHz)
T42 (1x512, 533MHz)
Toshiba A15 (2x256, 400MHz)

My questions are:

How do I tell what memory is in the existing computers (Sandra, anything else that does not need to be installed?)

What is the memory bus speed of the T41 (I know the T40 is 400MHz and the T42 is 533MHz but I'm not sure about the T41.

Any help gratly appreciated.

T40/T40p/T41/T41p/T42/T42p: Have 400MHz memory speed (PC2700)
T43/T43p: Have faster 533MHz memory

You can use T40-T42p memory on a T43 but will run at 400MHz
You can use, let's say T30 memory (PC2100) on a T40-T42p but will run only @ 266MHz
Current
T440p:
Core i7-4710MQ|8GB RAM|Intel SSD S3700 200GB | 14.1" IPS FHD | Windows 7 Pro, T450 Trackpad, Backlit keyboard, 2nd Caddy
Past: T420 HD+, X61s XGA, T61 14" SXGA+, T42p 14.1 SXGA+, T30, A22e

Are you sure about that? I thought the T42 has PC2700 (533MHz) and that the T40 has PC2100 (400MHz) memory/memory bus speed. It's just the T41 I'm not sure about.

Yes, I understand that putting 400MHz memory in a 533MHz Memory bus computer will drop the memory bus down to 400MHz. That's what I'm trying to avoid

Well, I figured it out. I may have been imprecise in some of my previous definitions but the T40 has a 133MHz double data rate memory bus for 2x133 (266MHz) total. It uses PC2100 memory. The T41 and T42 have a 2x166 (333MHz) memory bus and use PC2700 memory.

I was concerned that putting a 256Mb SODIMM of PC2100 memory would slow down the memory on the T41 (which it would) so I worked something else out.

So I now have:

a Toshiba A15 with 2x256Mb PC2100 (266MHz)
a T40 with 1x256Mb PC2100 and 1x512Mb PC2700 (266MHz)
a T41 with 1x256Mb PC2700 and 1x512Mb PC2700 (333MHz)
a T42 with 2x512Mb PC2700 (333MHz)

and everything running at its intended memory speed :D
