maximum amount of ram for T42.
maximum amount of ram for T42.
I recently go a T42 and I want to upgrade the RAM. I did a ram scan online and I got the information below. My question are:
-why is the max memory capacity only 1024 mb? If I install 2 sticks of 1024 mb ram then wouldn’t the max memory capacity be 2048?
-What is the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed on my T42?
-Is it easy to install the ram by myself? Can someone please briefly walk me through what is involved.
Thanks

Well, on all the T4X Series systems, you should be able to go to a maximum of 2GB of memory. I am not sure exactly why that spec list is saying that you can only have a maximum of 1024MB unless there is some sort of system cap, or fixed RAM module, that I am really unaware of.

I have 2 sticks of 1Gb installed and working in a T42. There's one slot on the motherboard and one slot accessible from the memory hatch below. You will need to take off the keyboard to get to the one on the motherboard. The procedure is explained in the T42 HMM manual.

Oh I see, duuuuhh.
The top "Memory Capacity" is how much you currently have and could make physical use of. The second, "Maximum Memory," is the maximum you could install.
Or something like that, the OP isn't exactly clear with the specs.

The problem is more in the lap of IBM. For instance if you read the T2 series HMM, they refer to "onboard" memory and "additional" memory. To start off with, both memory slots are in the bottom next to each other and there is no "onboard" slot as such. To make matters worse maximum could refer individually to the two types of memory as well as the total. In the T42 HMM, the terminology becomes "standard" and "optional" but there's also a "maximum" of 2048 Mb in brackets in the "optional" column which is meant to refer to the total. So, all round rather confusing and inconsistent.

Hi,
I think the idea is :
The system comes with 512MB installed
The maximum sodimm you can put in a memory slot is 1024MB
The maximum memory you can put in the system is 2048MB (since there are 2 slots).
