Having read many threads about installing the widcomm bluetooth drivers I'm none the wiser and microsoft is still in charge.
My latest attempt involved renaming the bth.inf and bth.pnf files then reinstalling the latest IBM bluetooth package (the one with Enhanced data rate). Alas, windows still seems to be in charge of bluetooth on my machine and the bluetooth options in Access Connections (4.21) are grayed out and unavailable.
Bluetooth works but connections with devices are dropped at annoyingly regular intervals, so I want to try some other driver if possible to see if it does any better (and give me BT control through Access Connections)
According to windows my "Thinkpad integrated bluetooth IV" device is using the Broadcom v5.0.1.3200 driver. Should I simply update this driver with something else? Or is this the best one to be using?
I've read about the widcomm driver installation hack online but at this stage am not willing to go through all that hassle if it can be avoided.
Bluetooth driver resolution... where's Widcomm?

Installing WidComm is not enough, you must un-install the Windows stack then disable it.
To un-install then disable, follow the instructions here. Be careful not to miss the un-install step since disabling alone is not enough. The two stacks can and will co-exist without issues but the machine seems to always default to using the services off the Windows stack only.
The BlueTooth driver (which it seems you have) can be found here
Note that enhanced data rate support is not available on the T4x series due to a hardware issue.
