Where to go after T41?

#1 Post by sagara » Thu Nov 30, 2006 9:40 am

I did the unthinkable and tried to replace my T41 with the new MacBook with the Intel D2C CPU. I even got Parallels software so that I could load XP and other apps on the MacBook that are not available for Mac. But after 2 days I finally sent the MacBook back - long story but basically I was ending up only using a Virtual Machine PC on a Mac. Might as well stick with a Thinkpad (I've had a 600E, 600X, and a T23 previously). But I'm not sure where to go from here. I main apps I use are Word and Photoshop CS2. Thinking of a X60 or X60s as at home I use an external monitor with wireless keyboard and mouse, so the not-at-home portabilty of the X60(s) is appealing.

Advice welcome.

No Core 2 Duo on X60 yet. But otherwise I personally love the X series portability (not to mention quiet operation!). You really need to decide whether you want/need SXGA+ (1400x1050), higher-performance graphics or the full-size keyboard (X is slightly smaller). Processors, memory, disks etc are pretty similar.

If you plan to run Vista, you might also search for X60 Vista experiences to see how well it works. With T series, Vista appears to be quite happy.

Well, what do you see yourself doing with it in the near future?

If you want ultimate portability, have an optical drive and bock at home, and do word processing/light PS CS2/web surfing, then you might as well go with an X60/s.

How much do you want to "future proof" it? :)

Interesting question since I am in exactly the same situation.

I have settled on getting an X60 with SXGA+. While it would be nice to get the Core 2 Duo, I have decided that I do not care enough and am not enough of a power user to get it. They are still in pre-order though so you have to wait a little.

Core 2 Duo isn't that important to me. I read some tests comparing C2D against CD and given the work I do there would be very little gain with the C2D. Same with the 'future' - I'm getting long in the tooth and what I use my TP for isn't going to change much. But weight/size portability is a big factor when it's stuck in my rucksack with a few books, even though I will be using it mostly at home. But then I'll have a full size external keyboard and 17" monitor (but no need for 1400 x 1050). As for Vista, I'll wait a few years until all the bugs are ironed out! IT looking like the X60s.

Thanks

Welcome to X-land. :D When you spec your machine, try building the similar config with both X60 and X60s -- sometimes the final differences in weight and price are not what one might expect.

Just what is the difference between a X60 and a X60s apart from different individual configurations?

Thanks

X60s has ultra-low voltage CPUs and (in some configurations) ultralight LCD screens. You can check tabook.pdf to see the different models, including weight and battery life (prices you'll need to check on the web site).

I would imagine that the lower voltage L2300 would give a longer batt. life, but reading around it seem to make little difference with the standard 4 cell batt. And from what I can gather from Lenovo's web page, the weight difference between a similarly configured X60 and X60s is small.

Being in the UK, for buying purposes Lenovo's UK web site only passes you on to about 5 dealers, who only supply pre-configured systems, so comparing models is a bit awkward (the UK has never been good on 'service').

But there's one X60 on ebay (UK), a new 1706W30 model (1.87GHz, 60GB, 1GB, wifi, bluetooth, intel 950, SD card Reader, 4c Li-Ion) with a 'Buy Now' price of 990 UK pounds [around just under 1800 US] with with 4 months of the 3 year warranty expired), but open to offers. Mmmm ...

Go for the X60 but keep the T41 it's good to have another computer as a backup.
