T43 making loud noise

#1 Post by leowiz » Sun Dec 10, 2006 9:09 pm

Hi all,

My 1.5 year old T43 (15" , 1.86, 521mb+1gb, 64mb ATI radeon x300, 40gb D , ...) suddenly started making this loud noise sounding like something is vibrating inside (very similar to the sound from the back of a refrigerator).

Its pretty loud and I just cant work on it anymore. It sems like its coming from the top left corner of the laptop.

Does anyone hav any clue what this is. My laptop is on waranty and I think I should send it to them.

Someone please help me with what I should do and what to expect.

Thanks !

It should be the fan, either the fins got dirt and it's vibrating.
Another thing maybe is that the fan needs to be lubricated. Other people have reported lubricating the fan with succesful results.

Is your T43 overheating?

Before sending it out on a warranty claim, open it up to check the fan and see if it is balanced and freely rotating first; even if the problem with it requires them to fix it, you can at least write a note describing the cause of the problem in detail so as to quicken the pace. :)

Thanks christopher_wolf and benottomex for replying.

As for overheating, I will have to say I am not sure. I use my laptop more as a desktop so never ever even though t about the overheating problem. But yeah, the left half of the keyboard no feels a little hot (this could be psycological too :). As for lubricating, I dont know anything about opening the laptop. I have never done that and I fear screwing something up. do you know how to poen and check that? Will it afffect the warrantly. It has got 3 years warranty and I bought it on August 2005. So I dont want to take a risk (being a student, I did invest a lot on my laptop).

How much time does it take for the repairs to be done once I send it (I live in Arizona). Do they pay for shipping ? If I have to open it, how do I do it ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

It would be best if you got the HMM for your model, then follow the instructions to open up the keyboard. There are 3-4 small screws on the bottom with keyboard glyphs and arrows pointing to them. It won't do any harm and it doesn't void your warranty. :)

Check the fan assembly more, if you want to although a quick glance and spin should elucidate any extant problems.

As for the time it takes on the repairs, I couldn't say. That depends on how far away you are from the closest repair depot, amongst other things.

There are two different ones for the T43 depending upon your model number. Download the appropriate one from one of the following two links. HMM = Hardware Maintenance Manual

Hardware Maintenance Manual (July 2005) - ThinkPad T43 (1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876)

Hardware Maintenance Manual (July 2005) - ThinkPad T43/p (2668, 2669, 2678, 2679, 2686, 2687)
