Quick Question

#1 Post by w0qj » Mon Dec 11, 2006 1:23 am

Hi everyone!

Just one quick question--Where can I check to see I have any bad sectors on my T42 (2373-K5H) hard drive (Win'XP-Pro SP2)

I've already ran my Scandisk utility by rebooting so that it checks and tries to recover bad sectors... which it finished and rebooted overnight...

Now, where can I check to see if there was any bad sectors found?

If you want a more thorough check of your hard drive, here are a couple of utilities:

Hitachi Drive Fitness Test

Fujitsu Diagnostic Tool

I think the OP already knows about that. The problem is that right after performing the Error Check, Windows shows the results of the scan for only several seconds and then continues to restart. The OP wants to see those results.

running "chkdsk /f" brings up a summary after the scan.

Also, to get a live check and a pretty good surface scan of your HDD, you might also want to use HDTune

Typing just Chkdsk alone will perform another run and show the results. The /F argument specifies that it should fix errors it finds on that scan (but not bad sectors), or a previous one if available. The /R option will repair all the errors it finds, but that takes longer. If you still can't see the results, simply run chkdsk within Windows by scanning the HDD and selecting the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" check box under Properties>Tools when you right click the C: drive under "My Computer." :)

Thanks for everyone's quick and helpful utilities!
Fortunately no bad sectors...

BUT just curious... using just Win'XP-Pro, how can I tell if I have any bad sectors? (I don't have time to wait 6 hours until it finish scanning, then show X bad sectors for just 6 seconds)...

Also, running Start>>Run>>cmd to get into MS-DOS mode, and cannot make any "chkdsk /f" or "scandisk" command--it won't let me?

How to check for bad sectors with just Win'XP-Pro alone?

I believe if you boot up off of a Windows install disk, be it XP or W2K, you can choose to go to the repair console (command prompt) and run chkdsk from there. Any messages should be left on the screen when chkdsk finishes.

EDIT: I also believe you can do this by creating an MS-DOS startup floppy disk and put chkdsk on it. Boot up from the floppy and run chkdsk.
