T42 lcd refresh rate?

#1 Post by Logi7 » Sun Sep 05, 2004 8:41 am

umm is there any point to changng the refresh rate?
right now its at 60
and my mouse doesnt looks as "smoth" as my desktop
im guessing its the refech rate.. but then raising it wouldnt really do anythign because of the response time

help im confused :(

I think that's the max it will go with an LCD panel, at least for thinkpads. Laptops notoriously have a pretty low max refresh rate.

Refresh rate isn't that important for LCDs - low response time (roughly the time it takes for a pixel to react to color changes) is the reason for the lack of smoothness in motion on many LCDs.

A good LCD generally has a response time of 25 milliseconds, while a high end gaming LCD has a response time of 16 milliseconds. 16ms and lower panels are said to virtually eliminate ghosting and other smearing effects, although I have yet to verify this for myself.

I read somewhere that BenQ is set to release an 8ms panel soon.

Yes definitely as K. Eng says; LCDs are not like CRTs where phosphors are constantly scanned many times a second by electrons. The lit time is short, and remember that the screen is scanned progressively, one line at a time, it isn't the whole picture so a low refresh rate is very intrusive, and will hurt your eyes.

Technically, LCDs not refresh at all; when the display does not change, the pixels can stay lit as long as the proper voltage is applied. To redraw, LCDs need to switch one sub-pixel off and switch another one on, which is sort of like a refresh concept, but response is much better terminology here since LCDs don't need any periodic boost to stay lit. So the 60Hz is not as horrid as it sounds, 16ms LCDs can barely redraw faster than this right now, and since no sequential scan is necessary (i.e. whole screen can redraw at the same time), the effective refresh rate is higher in terms of perception (except for the ghosting, smearing, etc..) since it is more solid state.
