Help - CPU usage issue

#1 Post by IBMorBust » Sun Dec 17, 2006 7:48 pm

Hey everyone. Long time no see.

I have a T42 Dothan 1.6 (725) with 1GB of RAM.

I've noticed that my CPU use is way, way too high given my applications.

For example - when using Google Earth, my CPU use rate often spikes to 100% and stays elevated in the 50% to 88% range, even when I'm not doing that much.

By contract, my wife's new Core Duo T2300 (1.66 GHz) HP, when running the same app, never spikes above 70%, and remains under 30% most of the time.

Is this normal?

TIA.

Well, do you know what applications are using up that many cycles on the CPU and how much RAM does your Wife's Core Duo have? :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Christoper - Thanks for the quick response.

I have 52 processes running according to Task Manager. I don't know what applications are using x number of cycles. I am a luddite. :)

She has 512 MB of RAM.

No problem. :)

After you bring up the Task Manager, go to the Processes tab abd then sort by CPU Usage by clicking the "CPU Usage" column bar title. When this occurs next, do that and see what process is doing it.

Just as an aside, 512MB RAM is a little anemic for a Core Duo laptop...but it depends on what it is being used for, it probably is enough given your descriptions. :)
