GPU Temps

#1 Post by Takumi » Tue Dec 19, 2006 9:51 pm

My T43p is overheating so I got some Arctic Silver and Canned Air and was planning on cleaning it up. I removed the screws from the bottom but when I try to push the plastic piece in between F8 and F9, it doesn't move. It looks like there's another plastic piece under it preventing it from being pushed down. Any ideas on how I can take this thing apart? Thanks!

Keyboard problem solved! Scroll down for the GPU issues :(

Ya, that was what I was trying before. Didn't really have any luck with that so I just ended up prying up the lower part of the keyboard. I know, it's not the best idea but it worked lol. Thanks for the help.

BTW what are the average temps for idle and under load for a T43p?

T43p can't be too much different than T43 in terms of processor, so...

I tend to see about 30C at idle, but this fan always runs.

Under full load, I get about 65C. That's with the BIOS controlling the fan. If I use TPFancontrol, it'll stay around 60C at full load.

Hmm, I'm getting about 55/70 for the CPU which is pretty decent. The new problem is for some reason my GPU temp skyrockets when I'm running graphics intensive programs such as games. The GPU runs at 60/90 with spikes hitting near 100!

I made sure the GPU area is dust free but but didn't add any thermal paste to it since there was a lot there already and it was spewing out. I'm using the ATI Catalyst 6.12 (CCC) drivers with the ModTool. I don't notice any graphical problems when playing the game. Any idea on how I can fix this or is this normal?

I`ve got nearly exactly the same values as you.
I´b be really interested to hear if its normal.

Do the modded drivers bring any gain in parformance compared to the standard firegl drivers?

I could tell a difference going from the Lenovo drivers to the Catalyst 6.12 drivers on my desktop. I'm using the Windows XP wallpaper and it looks much better with the Catalyst drivers. However, in games I couldn't really tell a difference. Which ones are you using btw?

I'm still getting the same temps when I installed the Lenovo drivers and the Omega so it might not be a driver issue. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, I would really appreciate it.

well, I run standard Lenovo/Ati drivers.

My only concern is damaging my TP with these high temperatures.
I would have thougt that a maschine is specified to be able to run at 100% without taking damage, so the only thing i´d like to know is:

Are our GPUs too hot? or is this "normal" behavior?

Hey Mark, I found kinda found a solution. Head over to http://www.pbus-167.com/ and download NHC. Then goto the Graphics tab and set the Powerplay settings to Balanced. It brought my GPU temps down into the 70s under load but there's a noticeable performance loss :(

Lemme know if anyone has a better idea on how to fix it without losing performance.

Our Friends at Intel

#10 Post by doppelfish » Thu Dec 21, 2006 11:00 am

Our Friends at Intel tell us that the Pennium M processors have a maximum operating temperature of 100º. The data sheet, which covers the 780, 770, 760, 750, 740, and 730 models requests a catastrophic thermal protection (Sec. 3.4, Page 18) to kick in at 125º. IBM, err, Lenovo tells us that the T43/p uses the models 770, 760, 750, 740, and 730, btw.

Of course, the lower the operating temperature of the core, the longer will it last, so any measure which reduces the temperature will be rewarded by a longer life of your TP.

cheers,
-- fish

Thanks for the info fish. We've been able to get the Central Processor to run cool but we're having problems with the heat on the Graphical Processer. On the T32p we have a FireGL V3200, do you know the maximum temps for that?

Maybe I should just send it in to Lenovo and have them fix it. I think my TP is still under warrenty.

Anyone know how this process works? Do they pay all the shipping costs? How long does it usually take to get the laptop back?
