Ultrabay Slim Combo II - won't burn 24x?

#1 Post by ZPrime » Tue Sep 07, 2004 9:59 am

I've got an Ultrabay Slim CDRW/DVD-rom combo drive. It claims to be able to burn 24x on capable media.

I've got a whole ton of 52x-capable Taiyo Yuden (Fujifilm "made in Japan") that it won't burn over 16x. It's on the latest firmware (1.03). Any ideas?

Is it possible that I got sold an older version of the drive or something? This one is a "Matshita UJDA745 DVD/CDRW". I bought it off a seller on eBay and it was listed as the current FRU for the Ultrabay Slim Combo II, and he mentioned 24x burning in the listing... but all of my CD programs seem to think it will only do 16x. :( 16x is slow, especially since it's Z-CLV (does a bunch at 8x, then 12x, and finally goes up to 16 near the end).

Maybe this is an excuse for me to go buy the multi-burner (w/dvd writing)... ;)

Pop the drive out and look at the top label. If it's the 24X drive right above the tray it will say "CD-RW/DVD" followed by a green symbol and a Roman numeral II. You can also check the FRU number on the label over the connector.

If it's the correct 24X drive, than I would say try some older media in it, such as 16X, 24X or 32X. I have stacks of 16X media that I burn at 24X without any problem using either the built-in burner in XP or Nero.

IBM DVD/CD-RW model UJDA745

#3 Post by davidashaw » Tue Sep 07, 2004 2:47 pm

I have the same model number (UJDA745) DVD/CD-RW as you described. It came with my T-40p purchased last November. On my specification sheet, it was rated at maximum speed of 16x. This is the first generation of Ultraslim Bay DVD/CD-RW module. Mine was manufactured in September 2003 and nowhere on the drive does it indicate that it is a version II model. I hope this helps. yeah, it looks like the [censored] ebay seller mis-listed this thing.

his listing said it was the revision 2 model, (the 755, 24x burn) but he sent me the 16x burner. He doesn't have any of revision 2, either.

The guy is in Canada so it will be a pain to get it back to him. He offered me $15 to keep this model. I paid about $118 for it (shipped).

Does $15 sound like a fair tradeoff? I have *no* use for the drive because I will just buy a 24x instead.

I'm curious though, for those of you with the newer version - is it Z-CLV? In other words, does it stop and change speeds a few times during the burn, or does it just steadily ramp up from 8x (or whatever) to 24?

I think a $15-$25 refund is reasonable. Keep the drive as a backup. Personally, I think high speed burning is over rated - beyond about 16x the increments are pretty small and associated with a whole host of caveats.

Well, what really makes the difference is Z-CLV vs. PCAV. This 16x is ZCLV and there are noticeable "pauses" when it changes speed. This also makes it take a bit longer to burn. The average speed of the drive is actually more like 12x - it burns the beginning at 8x, some more at 12, and then 16 near the end.

My A22 had a 24x ultrabay (not slim) burner and it went MUCH quicker for burning stuff.

I have a T40p

the drive in it is a 755 but no simbol II after the green sign

it had been made in 2004 february

I have no idea about the speed :) hoping 24x :) not if I would burn that often... a CD burner can't beat a double sided 9.4 GB DVD.... no matter how fast it is...
