Who's using my com ports?

I have a T43 that I use at work. I have a need sometime to use a usb to serial adapter for vt100 comunications. The service software I use needs Com 1 and something on the T43 is using com1. How can I find what on the T43 is using com 1?

I would guess it's the Fast IR Port. Check in Device Manager. Also in Device Manager, you can choose to view Resources by type. COM1 generally uses IRQ4 and I/O address 03F8-03FF.

I did find that that IRQ4 and I/O's are used by com 9.

OK, the question is, what is using COM9? Could be a mouse, bluetooth transceiver, PC Card, or other plugged in device. You may be able to change the IRQ and I/O on COM9, if you really need IRQ4 and I/O 03F8-03FF on COM4. A reboot may be required. Generally in Windows, if the device is not in use, then another device can use it's resources.

When i plug in the usb to serial adapt. It goes to com 5, if i try to use com 1 with the device a window message comes up and saida another device is using com 1 and wont let me use com 1. Com 9 on the device list is used by "communications Port (com9)"

Open up Device Manager, and expand the device list by clicking on the + sign next to each device listed. Start looking at devices under Infrared Devices, Modems, Multifunction Adapters, Network Adapters, and Ports. Double-click on each device then click on the Resources tab. See which device(s) are using IRQ4 and I/O 03F8-03FF. These would be the device(s) that you want to disable to free up the IRQ and I/O address for COM1.

I got it!!
Com1 was used by the communications Port labled com 9 . So I pluged in the usb to serial adptator.
