T40 vs. T42 or T43 for reliability

#1 Post by vk60402 » Sat Dec 30, 2006 9:03 am

I'm presently looking for a new notebook and was wondering if there is a big difference in overall reliability between T40 and later T4x series.

It appears that graphics specs on all T4x series are very similar and there is not much of a difference in screen quality (on 14.1 XGA screens).

What is the difference in build quality? I have a T42 from work and it appears relatively solid. Is the T40 going to be the same or weaker?

Thanks.

There should be no noticeable difference in build quality among the different laptops in the T4x line. It's same chassis and many similar components.

So, just because T40 came out sooner does not mean it has more bugs than T42 or T43?

While it's expected that minor revisions cause minor improvements, none of them are going to be deal breakers.

If you're into pure processing power, the T43 is preferred. If you don't do very CPU-intensive tasks and just want to get something cheap and solid, the T40 will be enough. I personally prefer the T42, because it's clock-for-clock almost as fast as the T43, and consumes less power.

I believe T40 used to have a flexing problem with the motherboard when carrying it with only one hand, but could happen to any T4x carrying it that way.
T42/T43 should be fine. T40 processors are slowish.
