Embarrased but need to ask this simple Bluetooth question

#1 Post by DDGuy » Tue Jan 02, 2007 2:35 am

I have a T43 in which the bluetooth works fine with my nokia E61 phone as long as I am just syncing or sending files from laptop to phone but it never works in phone to pc direction. Everytime I try to send anything (be it a contact or any other thing) from phone to my laptop, it just fails. I have tried going to Bluetooth advanced configuration (right click from the bt icon in the tray) and remove "secure connection" from every service under the "local services" tab but it doesn't seem to help.

Anybody please help, its driving me nuts

Sorry, I don't have any solution to your problem, but I can tell you I have a Nokia 6233 connecting fine via Bluetooth with my T43 for traffic in both directions with Nokia PC Suite ver 6.8.22.0

Some phones do not fully support OBEX. The cellular providers do not always make this clear.

This past summer I bought a Motorola 815e from Verizon based on the fact that it fully supported all bluetooth features. I even downloaded a .pdf file from Verizon which said as much. It turns out the .pdf was out of date. Verizon had the firmware updated on the 815e so that only some bluetooth features were supported. It turns out Verizon's site did indicate that the 815e did not support OBEX (and what typical consumer knows what OBEX is?).

I browsed the forums and discovered that there was a "seem edit" that could be performed on the 815e to restore full bluetooth functionality. Of course if you do this, you violate Verizon's TOS, and void any warranty on the phone. I ended up dropping Verizon during the trial period.

Bottom line, make sure the phone your cellular provider supplies is not crippled by the cellular provider. Verizon is notorious for this. If you go to Motorola's site for Motorola Phone Tools, Motorola makes it clear that some of the features do not work on Verizon phones.
Motorola wrote:IMPORTANT NOTE: This downloadable software is fully supported for Cingular and T-Mobile customers. However, portions of this software's functionality have been disabled for Verizon or Nextel customers, so Motorola Phone Tools will not work fully with phones using those carriers. If you are a Verizon customer, all multimedia and internet connection features in this software will be disabled due to carrier request. Please contact your service provider for further information.
Motorola Phone Tools

I realize the OP has a Nokia and not a Motorola. I only give this as an example of what to look for. If the capability is available in the phone (an unlocked one for example), the cellular provider that sells the phone may have disabled that capability. Try to find this information from the cellular provider or the appropriate cellular provider forum - official or unofficial.

Oh, via PC Suite is not a problem even for me. Via PC suite the phone appears in the explorer and I can copy from/to the phone without any issue. The problem comes when I am on my phone and want to send something directly from the option menu to my PC (specially SMS's as they are not visible via the PC Suite provided explorer)

Good point though !!

GomJabbar, your point is appreciated but I am sure my problem is somewhere in some setting on the laptop side for Blue tooth settings. OBEX file transfer over blue tooth is supported by my phone (This is proven by the fact that the BT Wizard on the phone side browsed in my phone and created icons for all supported services in "my blue tooth places" - OBEX File transfer icon is there)

I think BT goes through the Windows firewall, so you might try turning it off temporarily.

Do you mean received SMS messages? If so, I can see the received SMS messages on my 6233 from within PC Suite.

I also just tried the OBEX connector associated with the 6233 icon in "My Bluetooth Places" and found that it works fine for transferring files from the 6233 to my T43.

Can you explain in more detail what it is you want to be able to do?

Cheers,

Bill

Windows Firewall? but that's connection specific and I don't get any "network icon for BT" on the tray to click on to be able to disable firewall (in my Gigabit LAN icon when I right click, I get an option for changing the windows firewall setting for the traffic on <that> connection. For BT, there is no such thing.

I do have a mcfee desktop firewall but that's disabled all the time

My bad...SMS was a bad example as its indeed visible through PC Suite Explorer. Ok, here's what I want to do-

I have Psiloc Wireless presenter installed on my phone, which tries to send a small file to PC over BT to "extend functionality" but it fails. Then I tried to send SMS's to PC over BT, same result, tried to send contacts to PC over BT, same result....nothing can be send to PC from phone over BT....images, ringtones, whatever....

Well, I have a "Presenter" application preloaded by Nokia in my 6233 (as I discovered tonight when I went looking for it). After downloading the companion PC application from the Nokia web site and installing it on my ThinkPad, the 6233 Presenter application works fine, using a Bluetooth connection for controlling Power Point on my T43.

I'm using COM5 as the port, as that is what a popup from something or other on the the T43 task bar item told me a new connection to my 6233 had appeared on.

I'm not sure how I would "send" any of those items off a 6233 to my T43 (or that is even functionality that is supported on a 6233) so I am unable to test that.

Bill

I just set it up on another T43 and this time its on COM23 (which actually maps as COM1 in "My Bluetooth Spaces").... go figure?!?

Anyway, this time I was able to identify that the advice on which COM port the phone had appeared on was popped up by the Bluetooth Icon in the task bar.

6233 is a Nokia S40 3rd edition phone while E61 is a S60 3rd edition phone (Running Symbian 9.1 OS compared to S40 which runs Nokia's own OS). I actually came very close to buying 6233 myself (excellent reviews) but being an old Symbian loyal settled on E61. Now the thing is that on E61, the "PC Companion" application is actually send from phone to the PC compared to older nokia's where it was a seperate d/l. Now this is where I get stuck as T43 refuses to accept any thing from the phone over BT

That should be simple. Select any SMS, Contact, Image, Ringtone etc.->Click on "Options" and then look for "send" option. Under that "send using BT "will be there, click there and select your laptop as destination.

Edit: Last night I updated the BT sw from SW installer. Now there is one improvement. I can now send contacts from the phone to the PC but nothing else (ringtones, media files, images etc.). Contact part is rather cool. I use PC Suite to sync my Lotus Notes with my phone (minus the contacts as LN syncing for contacts is rather horrible). I have Microsoft outlook but its is not used. So I marked all my contacts in phone and hit send and selected my laptop and whoosh, within a few secs my Outlook was populated with all my phone contacts and I like the Outlook interface for contacts a lot.

More Edit: Check this out http://www.s60tips.com/category/pc-connectivity/

It seems like a common problem. Unfortunately the mentioned solution is for Microsoft BT Stack and not the one IBM gives (this right click - receive file option is not there at all for me). Microsoft BT icon in still there in Control Panel but I can't get it to work along side IBM's BT software and I am too lazy to try and remove IBM BT s/w and see what happens then

thanks for trying it out...btw did u know that you now have an older FW for your E61. V3 fw is now out (apparently V2 has more bugs than it had features :D )

Thanks.

I have not been able to send anything to either of the T43s I used with my 6233, but I have been able to send to my desktop PC, which has a D-Link Bluetooth USB device with a standard Widcomm Bluetooth stack installed.

Looks like there well may be some sort of issue here with Nokia phones and the IBM/Lenovo hardware and/or IBM/Lenovo version of the Widcomm Bluetooth stack.

Cheers,

Bill
