XP Reinstall

#1 Post by technophreak » Tue Jan 02, 2007 4:30 pm

Hi

I bought a Thinkpad T40 from eBay a couple of months ago. It came with XP Pro preinstalled, but no media to install from. I want to reformat now, and have an XP Pro SP2 installation disc. Will this disc work with my T40 license and include all the drivers and applications I need for my T40 to work properly?

Also, the Access IBM button doesnt do anything atm. I noticed that there is no ibm serial number on the bottom of the laptop. Is this normal?

Thanks

What you got is not normal. You should have serial number and a Predesktop Area from which to re-image. Without that, if represented as a good unit, you seem to have been hosed.

I didnt realise the recovery utility was on a seperate partition. I have got the predesktop area. Is there any way to back this up onto disk incase something goes wrong with my harddrive?

Thanks

If you have the PreDesktop Area, then F11 should reimage the machine complete. Some one here will post how to get that going if F11 does not work. As to back up, I don't think you can on a T40 or T41 (I have a T41). ... JD Hurst

I can understand you wanting to have the recovery media. If the suggestions above do not work, you can still download and install the SP2 update from microsoft.com. The T40 software upgrades and drivers are available for download from Lenovo's site. You also have the option to buy a set of Product Recovery Discs from Lenovo for about $45.

Or, instead of spending $45, you might want to ask around here for a WTB on the disks. :)

She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
