Software Installer Problems

#1 Post by blinker » Wed Jan 03, 2007 9:58 pm

I have a T43 and have faithfully used Software Installer to keep it up to date. However, after my last update I realize that the Software Installer now believes I have uninstalled a lot of items - items that really are installed.

Any ideas on how to sync Software Installer to reality?

Thanks!

Just let the SOFTWARE Installer reinstall whatever it thinks is missing.

You have probably been burned by a bad install package of PC Doctor 5 that Lenovo did not test before distributing.

I sincerely hope that you have a backup from before you installed PC Doctor 5.

I think you will find that your Windows "Add/Remove Programs" is also is a state of distress.

Unfortunately a version of PC Doctor 5 that was put on the download site for IBM/Lenovo had a installer with some problems, which created the symptoms you are experiencing. The best way out of it is to use WIndows System Restore, and restore your system image to a date prior to the PC Doctor 5 update. This does not impact any of your data, but will mean you lose anything you installed after the restore point date.

There have been a number of threads here that have gone into this in much more detail, so doing search on "PC Doctor" should yield a lot more information.

Cheers,

Bill

Wow, thanks for the quick replies!

I have tried to reinstall everything and the Software Installer still doesn't think anything has changed.

I wasn't aware of the PC Doctor problem and I have recently wiped out my system restore due to a possible virus, so there is really nothing to restore. Can this problem be fixed without a restore?

I will search further for PC Doctor.

Thanks!

It can be fixed by hand, which is very tedious, or by a complete system reimage...which is probably the easier route given that you already don't have anything on it to backup anymore. :)

Unfortunately, I don't have a system restore but I do have a lot of installed programs that show blank in the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

I read that it is possible to restore the uninstall info by editing the registry, but I did not find details on exactly what or where in the registry to edit. I realize this is tedious work as I have done it many times before. What are the details?

Does this fix also repair Software Installer?

Thanks!
