R&R and my own partitions?

#1 Post by Paul Unger » Thu Sep 09, 2004 3:45 am

Is it possible to retain the IBM Rescue & Recovery hidden partition and create one's own partitions??? I've tried two methods, but there's got to be a third :?

First, I tried using the recovery cds . . . Throughout the 2 hour 'recovery' I was never given the blue 'windows' screen that allows one to create partitions and assign one as the 'windows' partition.

Then I tried creating a bootable cd (as per forum instructions), ran it successfully, and got a lovely partitioned drive . . . without the IBM R&R! It did have a partition called "IBM_Service" on C:, but it wasn't the R&R thingy--that's supposed to be on a hidden partition. This was NOT hidden, and had a 'MiniNT' folder, among other things . . .

So what am I missing? Can I have my cake (IBM R&R) and eat it too (my own partitions)?! I'd appreciate a reply from anyone who has both (R&R and their own partitions). Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't understand anything.

RR does not save the backup image in a hidden partition but a hidden folder in a partition you have to specify. You can create e.g. a D partition and than save your hidden image folder in that D partition.

Please check the manual:

http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54504

P.S. I just realised that your problem is the creation of partitions:
either use partition magic or acronis partition expert or use your recovery CDs: interrupt the recovery process of the first CD by pressing ctrl + C, you enter the DOS modus, type fdisk, create the partition(s), search this forum for further details, e.g. see jdhurst in

Thanks for the reply, Zeitgeist. I read the jdhurst topic; pressing F3 does nothing and pressing 'esc' gives me a "System Reboot Message: please close all open applications. If you continue, the system will reboot and you will lose unsaved data. Do you want to continue? Yes/No". I clicked "Yes" and pressed F3 at various times during the reboot, and again it did nothing (from jdhurst's post I expected a command prompt from which to run fdisk). I also tried your suggestion of pressing CTRL+C during bootup with the first CD (1 of 1 "IBM Rescue & Recovery with Rapid Restore", not 1 of 7 "Product Recovery CD for Thinkpad T42, etc.") and again, nothing. Or do I need to press CTRL+C during the actual recovery process (i.e., after pressing "Restore factory contents")? If so, at what point?

I also found this in the Rescue & Recovery Help:

"Understanding recovery options/Restoring the factory contents: Attention: If you are running this utility from a CD, all data and partitions on your hard disk will be deleted. The end result will be a single C: partition containing the original factory contents. If you are running this utility from a hard disk that has multiple partitions, you will be given the option of restoring the factory contents to the C: partition only and leaving the other partitions intact, or deleting all partitions and installing the factory contents in a single C: partition."

It's the second option I'm after: a hard disk with multiple partitions, with factory contents on C: and the other partitions intact. Any more suggestions? Thanks

Paul, the easiest way to create partitions is the use of Acronis Partition Expert or Partition Magic. I did it with Acronis and in 10 minutes I had the addtional D partition.

Earlier RR version 2.5 (NOT 4.0) could not handle partitions created by these programs and I used fdisk- either by using the first recovery CD or by using a Win98 start diskette (which you can burn on CD if you don't have an external USB FDD)- I have to admit that I have only experience with the recovery CDs of a A31P and T23 model- But jdurst gave analogeous instructions for the T4x model.

Again, try to get one of these partition programs. Good luck!

Paul - don't know if this is any use, but this is what I did to obtain an extra partition on my brand spanking new 7K60...

1.Put the new HD in laptop, started R+R sequence with my recovery cds...
2.When recovery sequence completed, restarted laptop and went into the BIOS to 'unhide' the hidden recovery partition
3.Loaded and ran Partition Magic to create a new primary partition
4.Restarted laptop, went into BIOS and hid the recovery partition again.

So now I've got the good ol' IBM_PRELOAD as my 'C' partition, and 'Workspace' as my 'E'
