Installing NEW MEMORY MODULE

#1 Post by RukRem » Fri Jan 05, 2007 3:12 am

ok maybe this is a silly question. But when I bought my thinkpad it had one DIMM (1 gig); I just added another one. My question is: is there anything i need to adjust when running 2 DIMMS or a setting to adjust the speed of the memory?

Thoughts?

Nope, just plug and play. You may notice that hibernation takes a little bit longer to enter and exit. That's due to the extra memory now being stored/read. Oh, and some programs may notice the "new" memory and ask that you re-activate. Had that happen to me for Windows and Adobe CS2.

Do you also mean within Windows (pagefile)? If so, go to:
My Computer-->Properties-->Advanced-->Performance Settings-->Advanced: And check the virtual memory. I would just let Windows choose the value, unless you know what's good for the amount of RAM you have.

I upped my T41's RAM from 1GB to 2GB last year.

One big benefit (i.e. speed boost) is that I can now run with *no* page file--everything I have fits within 2GB of virtual memory.

Much snappier on application switches. Less battery drain too.

Doesn't hibernate slow down with 2GB of RAM?!

You should always have a pagefile!

I very much agree with dsigma6's recommendation that you should go to the virtual memory properties page and ensure that it is set to 'System Managed Size'.

If it was already set that way before you put the new memory chip in the computer, great, then you don't need to change it. But... there is a good chance that the Virtual Memory size might be set to some Custom Level, and if you change the amount of physical memory in the laptop by sticking another chip in it, then that pre-existing custom level will no longer be appropriate.

About all I can add to dsigma6's excellent description of how to get to the Virtual Memory property sheet is this: After you click on the little button that says "'System Managed Size", be sure you click on the box that says SET. The SET box is not the same as the OK button at the bottom... you have to press SET, then press OK, which is not exactly intuitive. If you don't press SET, then the computer does not take note of the fact that you pressed the "'System Managed Size" button.

Certain apps require a page file, as they store their DLLs there, regardless of whether or not RAM is exhausted.
If you don't have a page file, Windows then starts to create TMP files for those DLLs, which is a much slower process than any paging file.

The memory isn't stored in exactly the same, uncompressed raw manner it is in active RAM. It is compressed slightly storing the active parts of RAM. There is a very slight slow down, which is most often not noticed unless you look really hard, but that is because, with more memory available, the more processes a user tends to run and the system spawns. :)
