Keyboard beeps
Keyboard beeps
When typing, the IBM is able to detect common mistypes. That's pretty useful, except that it makes an annoying beep. Is there a way to keep the error detection feature on but turn the beeps off?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Keyboard beeps
That depends on how you define "mistype." The T42's keyboard uses (I believe an old) serial scheme that has limits for how many keys can be simultaneously pressed (for example, try pushing o, u, and n together, or in very quick succession). You can either live with it, hit the mute button, or open a prompt and type "net stop beep," which will stop that and other system notification beeps (you can reboot or type "net start beep" to cancel the stop).Udayan wrote:When typing, the IBM is able to detect common mistypes. It bugs me too, but whenever I mention it here the overwhelming response is "learn how to type correctly."
Thanks. Here's more info: I type quickly and do occasionally make mistakes, but somehow the laptop is able to distinguish between errors and just keys in rapid succession. When it is an error, it beeps and does not output the character. When it is not an error, but just keys in rapid succession, it beeps but still outputs the character (it did this while typing succession). Is there a way to turn the beeps of in case #2 (beep but still types char)? Thanks.

i'm pretty sure the keyboard isn't detecting typos. it beeps b/c you're pushing keys at the same time.

I see where you're getting, but I've noticed the phenomenon before and if we're talking about the same thing I still don't think it's noticing typos.
If you type in quick succession, and still have 2 keys pressed down when you hit a3rd key, it will beep, and no character will be outputted as long as all 3 keys are down. What happens next depends on what you do. If you then release one of the first two keys you were holding down before you pressed the third key, it will immediately output the 3rd key (the line gets freed). However, if you first release the third key you just pressed, no character comes out.
I'm willing to be that's what is going on. If, as you say it's actually catching typos, it should catch all misspellings, so if you type asdf or querty or ibm or cingular, or Udayan for that matter, it should always be beeping in the middle of all those words, right?
1 - Go into the device manager.
2 - Menu->View->Show Hidden devices.
3 - Expand Non Plug and Play devices.
4 - Double Click "Beep".
5 - Select the Driver Tab.
6 - Here you can decide what you want to do with the Beep.
Otherwise you can do the same thing in the registry with the following key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\System\Beep\Start
The values can be from O to 4. I will let you play with them to determine what they do?
Disables, automatic, demand, etc .......
