help, t42 doesnt burn cds anymore!

#1 Post by skanky » Wed Jan 10, 2007 3:35 am

i've just noticed that my t42 doesnt burn cd or even dvd media anymore. i had brought a dvd writer (UJ-822S) from the classifed forum on here a while back, now when writing cd-rws nero says that the disc is full (well yeah i know that!) and it cant write to the drive and aborts, normally it would give an option to blank it before writing like the one on my desktop does.

so thinking it was hardware related, i put my original cdrw drive back in and i worringly get the same thing.

the imapi cd burning service is set to manual and is started, so its not that.

any suggestions please?

just a question, are you using RW media or R media?

Also since you mentioned Nero, did you install INCD?

CDRW media, i'm pretty sure that i've used the same cds before with no problems.

nope didnt install INCD, just the basic "burning rom" app..

i hadnt tried a rewritable dvd recently but a cdrw in the dvd writer should work, as well as in the cd writer, no?

Yes, a CD-RW will work just as well as a DVD-RW for testing purposes.

When did this start to happen, and did you make *any* changes to the system or software configuration before hand?

i've not made any changes recently that i recall.

i could understand the dvd writer having problems as its not a standard bit of t42 kit (came off a t43 i think) but the cdrw that came with shouldnt not work.

it seems that RW media doesnt seem to work in both drives, not even CDRW media which is compatible with just about every writer out there.

tried a CDR, worked fine in both drives. initial response would now be media, but i've used this media before, i know i've used the CDRW combo drive with the rewritable cds.

I´ve been having the same problem(s) with my UJ-822S.

After a lot of searching I know that this Matshita is a crappy burner. A lot of people have problems with this (expensive  ) burner.

I think (or hope?) it is a software problem.
Reading cd´s is no problem; burning cd´s sometimes.
I burned a set of recovery dvd´s without problems. After that it will not burn dvd´s and reads them occasionally.

If there´s someone out here that has any sugestions on what I can do, I´d be a happy guy. Almost given up hope for this drive......

This may be a motherboard failure

I had the same symptopms, no configuration change, it just suddenly stopped buring CDs. I put this CD_RW drive into another thinkpad, and it worked (with the same blank CD).

Then, USB ports failed. And then, the screen started to freeze, so eventually I diagnozed that the soldering of the GPU chip failed, like so many people described here.
