Wasted a whole day flashing firmware to get rid of 2010 err

#1 Post by richk » Fri Jan 12, 2007 10:07 pm

I'm working on a T43 that needed motherboard and HDD. The mb was easy. I spent too long reading posts about the 2010 problem. Then I tried to install an hitachi HTS421260H9AT00, which is one of the models supposedly handled in the latest IBM flash CD. It turns out that there are real problems with the CD. The thing tries to flash with program HFUI16.exe, which is missing from the CD. The model defintions list the 40GB and 80GB drives twice, and the 30 and 60GB drives are missing. I cannot believe that I swapped motherboards in an hour and wasted a whole day unsuccessfully changing disks.

I'm not familiar with flashing your particular drive. I have flashed two Hitachi 7K100 100gb drives, and had no problem with either. Did you just use the flash program on autopilot? If so I think that was your problem. The "goal" of using that CD is to "fool" the firmware program into putting the firmware from the "Options" version of the HD onto the the retail (non-ibm) hard drive that you can buy from Newegg, et. al. To my knowledge the program is NOT going to do that by itself, you have to give it commands tailored to your particular HD make and model to "fool" it into doing what it is not designed to do.

With the 7K100 drives, the instructions available on this board are pretty clear, but with some other drives although feasibly possible, I think you'd have to figure out how to change the commands around to accomplish this. If you did not do this and just tried to get the program to do this on its own, it is not designed to do this and that would explain your failure. Presumably, however, the drives are undamaged and could be worked on again if you have the right set of commands to follow.

The board gave me plenty of info to do it. The problem was that the CD and all the floppy images were missing the flash program I needed. The programs are named HFUI11.exe thru HFUI15.exe and I needed HFUI16.
