Thinkpad 2nd HDD adapter for ultrabay slim stuck in machine
Thinkpad 2nd HDD adapter for ultrabay slim stuck in machine
Yesterday I got an IBM 2nd HDD adapter for ultrabay slim for my T43P, put a hard drive in it and put it in the bay, and now it's stuck in there. I never had a problem getting the DVD drive out, but I can't figure out what the drive adapter is hanging up on. Has anyone else run into this sort of thing and figured out how to free it? I'd rather not send it back to Lenovo if possible, but I'm not going to damage it either.
Re: Thinkpad 2nd HDD adapter for ultrabay slim stuck in mach
I have one of these Ultrabay adapters too. In my T42, it went in very easily and there was lots of room between it and the opening to the bay. In my new T43, the fit is much tighter, but it still comes out without force.sprior wrote:Yesterday I got an IBM 2nd HDD adapter for ultrabay slim for my T43P, put a hard drive in it and put it in the bay, and now it's stuck in there. Have you pushed in the tab that springs out on all the ultrabay accessories, that lets you pull the unit out a little, then allowing you to grab the actual unit?
Another thing to consider is that you don't have the hard drive in there absolutely flat. Once you get the unit out, unlock the drive in the ultrabay, push it flat, then lock it back in. This might help and I'm going to try it on mine the next time I put the HDD Ultrabay back in.

I slid the little catch which releases the pull tab which usually allows you to pull out the DVD, but in this case that pull tab doesn't budge any furthur - the 2nd hdd adapter doesn't come out of the body of the laptop at all. I don't know what thing you're talking about pushing in.
That pull tab is part of the laptop itself, not part of the Ultrabay accessory so I'm not totally sure what you are referring to.

There could be a couple of things going wrong here... If the Ultrabay Slim is constructed the same as the Ultrabay 2000, then:
1) There's a threaded insert in the bottom of the lever which can be secured by a screw. I'm assuming that you aren't using the screw
. The threaded insert can fall out (part way) and prevent the lever from popping out. Check to see if this is causing the problem. If it is, you can push/pull the threaded insert with a straightened-out paper clip or small screwdriver.
2) It's possible that the plastic slide has broken, prevent the lever from ejecting. You can manually release it by poking a paper clip in from underneath the Ultrabay drive and next to the release lever. I'll see if I can post a picture of the technique I use.
edit: Okay... here's two pics...

Nope, the Ultrabay slim is totally different from the Ultrabay 2000 (I've got machines with each of them). I've always had the DVD drives for each of them come out very nice and easy, but that hard drive adapter in the Ultrabay slim is caught up on something - if I could even tell where it's stuck I might be able to get it out, but I can't.
