Difference: T41 vs T40?

#1 Post by jank0003 » Fri Sep 10, 2004 7:24 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking at two different open box thinkpads a T41 and a T40. The T40 is listed as 4.5 lbs whereas the T41 is listed at 5.9 lbs. Other than a 0.1 difference in the processor there is no difference in the specifications between the two machines, but a $250 boost in price for the T41. Why are the T40 series lighter than the T41? Which would you prefer?

Thanks,
Janx

T40's and T41's vary in weight depending on configuration. 4.5lbs is the travel weight for the most basic 14.1" XGA models and means the weight without the optical drive. If you're like most people here, you're interested in the 14.1"SXGA+ units which are a little heavier. They weigh 5lbs with the 6 cell battery and 5.4lbs with the 9 cell battery.

Tell us what specs you are looking for and we'll point you towards an appropriate T41 or T42 model.

The T42 2378FVU is a good value if you're looking for SXGA+ for under $2000:

Pentium M 735 1.7ghz
256mb RAM
40gb 5400rpm Hard Drive
24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
14.1" SXGA+ 1400x1050 LCD
64mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
Intel 802.11b/g WiFi
Gigabit Ethernet
V.92 56k Modem
6-Cell Battery
Windows XP Pro
1-Year Warranty
$1849

If you don't need SXGA+, there's the 2373DUU:

Pentium M 1.5ghz
256mb RAM
40gb 5400rpm Hard Drive
24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
14.1" XGA 1024x768 LCD
32mb ATI Mobility Radeon 7500
Intel 802.11b/g WiFi
Gigabit Ethernet
V.92 56k Modem
6-Cell Battery
Windows XP Pro
1-Year Warranty
$1599

Lastly, there's a new T42 that was just released, the 23795VU:

Pentium M 725 1.6ghz
512mb RAM
40gb 5400rpm Hard Drive
24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
14.1" XGA 1024x768 LCD
64mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
Intel 802.11b/g WiFi
Gigabit Ethernet
V.92 56k Modem
6-Cell Battery
Windows XP Pro
3-Year Warranty
$1899

Of course, if your budget is over $2000, that opens up many more possibilities.

Haha. The model for 1599 is my absolute limit. Thanks for the advice, those are some nice options.

I would choose the T40. The only difference is a little speed and the HD airbag system.

Buy a T40 and maybe swap the fan to a m10 long fan if you are experiencing some noise with the cpu fan.

The T40's have been discontinued so you would have to buy a used or refurbished unit.
