Hardware Maintenance Disk

#1 Post by pwinnicker » Fri Sep 10, 2004 8:22 pm

Hello!

I just recently purchased a new motherboard and maintenance manual to replace the motherboard in my old (but great) T20. Here I am, plastic-cover-encased motherboard in one hand, screwdriver in the other, free of all electrostatic charge, ready to work, when I read something in the manual about needing "ThinkPad hardware maintenance diskette version 1.62" to carry my system unit serial number over ---- what?

So, that's it, that's why I'm here. Can anyone tell me where to find "ThinkPad hardware maintenance diskette version 1.62", or at least point me in the right direction to finding "ThinkPad hardware maintenance diskette version 1.62"? I found my system unit serial number when trying to boot my system, but I'm going to need the disk for when I get the new motherboard installed.
I googled the hell out of variations of "ThinkPad hardware maintenance diskette version 1.62", but came up empty handed. I found references to version 1.60, will 1.60 work? Please, I would greatly appreciate any input.

I don't think you will have access to that kind of software... reason is that IBM tech probably uses it to fix computers and to maintain the warranty status of laptops, they need to transfer the serial number to the new motherboard.

I am not sure if the motherboard already has a serial number of some sort, but if you bought the board from IBM... give them a call. Chances are you probably don't need it... but that would be a guess...

Good Luck and let us know what happens.

Hey Patrick,

Check your gmail. I sent you HMD 1.60 and 1.69. Don't have 1.62.

HMD

Hey,

Thanks for promptly replying to my first post. G-man, thanks for emailing me the HMD .exe's. Well, leesiulung, after reading your post and thinking to myself that my warranty was about 1 year expired, I decided to take a risk and just change the motherboard without using the HMD. I'm sitting in front of a working T20 once again!

For those out there in the same fix, I'll give a little more information. I bought the motherboard and maintenance manual thru ebay. DO NOT buy the maintenance manual unless you have thouroughly checked for it online (some models' manuals may not be online, but many are). I found it for free online AFTER I purchased it -- doh! The motherboard I purchased was NOT just the system board, it was the system board, cpu, fan, speaker, bottom casing, and more for around $120. Hope this helps someone!

Again, many thanks for helping me.

-Patrick
