Just recovered my laptop, package problems

#1 Post by Dead1nside » Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:20 pm

Hi guys, just restored my T41p to factory settings with the recovery discs. However all the software is really outdated and the then update program wouldn't connect to the server. So I download the latest version of Software Update and away it goes. However it's missed a lot of things, like the OSD overlays and Access Connections, and I'm sure countless other things. Software Installer doesn't pick up on this either.

Anyway around this?

On another note, it's put my desktop icons miles apart, same in my Control Panel, this is just a waste of space. Is there a workaround?

Thanks in advance for your help.

display properties, appearance tab, advanced for the icon spacing...

otherwise i cant help you, but i can suggest- once you do get everything the way you want, use a ghosting/cloning/imaging program to copy the entire install to a backup file. i didnt get any restore disks with my used t40, but with archos true image i have a full-restore disk so i can put the laptop back to the way i had it the first day. it saves so much hassle and... well i think you are experiencing what im trying to say.

Most definitely, thanks for the usability fix. I have to hand it to the ThinkVantage tools, I just can't live without them. Thanks again.

I've installed Software Installer, it's now picking up what seems like everything. However it's not all working. Like OSD, network drivers etc.

"Not working"

#7 Post by Dead1nside » Mon Jan 15, 2007 9:42 pm

Ok, the programs are all listed by Software Installer. Which is looking through DRIVERS and IBMTOOLS, but my Touchpad scrolling, OSD, wireless drivers etc. which as I say are all listed as installed and current versions are just not functioning, I don't see any OSD, I can't access scrolling in the Touchpad options, it's as if they're not installed.

Should be somethings you haven't install.
Install (Check) all the items at "SI" & SU2"
& install them even you think it's no use for you,
then your ThinkPad should be OK then!

My tip for updating ThinkPad software ... do it manually.

I've just done a clean install of XP (retail) and I then installed *ALL* the ThinkPad software by hand. Everything went in first time and you have the satisfaction of knowing *EXACTLY* what's been installed.

I had printed off the device driver list and ticked off each one as I installed them.

At the end of it all, I used Software Installer to just check the status and it said everything was installed and up-to-date.

Hi again,

Followed your advice and downloaded and installed all the relevant things in the driver matrix. However I have a Yellow Question mark for Ethernet in my Device Manager, and when Fn+F5ing I only see my Bluetooth and not my wireless. There's another thread with someone looking for the same driver as me, anyone know where to get hold of the T41p wireless driver. It's the a/b/g model, IBM, Atheros chipset.

Thanks for all your help. Really eats up time installing all this. So I'll make sure to make an image.

EDIT: From what I know it's the, IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter driver.

EDIT: I think it's here http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... MIGR-55359

Not that driver! That's for Windows 98 SE, NT 4.0!

I believe Talon88 has a link to the driver you want in the following post.

Your is a IBM 11a/b/g mPCI & mine is ThinkPad 11a/b/g.
Both are Atheros chipset. Don't know the Difference....

I can use Access Connections v4.23 with
WLAN Driver v4.1.102.147 without problem.

Here is the Driver you need for your system....
Run "Setup" directly.
Your link look like is for NT4 & is a too old version
You can try the following one....!

Thanks. I'm having troubles currently (without acting on your steps) with getting wireless to work with access connections, it won't detect anything. Whereas the Windows one will find networks.

EDIT: Giving it a go now.

EDIT2: Problem solved. All working well after about two hours of installing stuff :) Thanks for your help guys.
