Hard Drive advice needed...T42

#1 Post by ipXpert » Sat Sep 11, 2004 3:52 pm

I purchased a new T42 about a month ago and would like to get a faster and larger capacity hard drive. What would you buy if you were me?

I also want to sell my 30gb/5400rpm drive that is in it now. How much will I be able to get for my old drive and how much will the new drive cost?

Thanks,

ian

My CWU was delivered with the 80Gb Hitachi - marvellous drive. So marvellous I bought the 7K60 which is smaller (60Gb) but faster 7200 rpm versus 5400.

Rather largely depends on what you need to stock on your HD - either one is fast, with the 7K60 just that bit faster...I was able to get mine for 164€ which is cheap in Europe (France)

If I were you I would buy a good external drive. Keep all the storage on that huge external drive (250-300gb) and leave the important stuff on your Thinkpad HD...

You can probably sell your 30gb on Ebay and get some decent money for it. For your new drive, I would suggest getting the Hitachi 60gb 7200 rpm drive. Big difference in comparison to the 80gb 4200 rpm drive that originally came with my T40.

I wouldn't touch memorylabs with a barge pole!

To the best of my knowledge all of the laptop HDs they sell are OEM drives, ergo without factory warranty.

I'll stick with http://www.zipzoomfly.com and, when necessary, http://www.newegg.com.

Zipzoomfly has the 7K60 for $172.50 with free 2nd day Fedex delivery and it comes with a full 3 year warranty from Hitachi.

A no-brainer to me!

I got the hitachi 80Gb 5400rpm from ZipZoomFly to replace the IBM/Hitachi 40GB 5400RPM drive in my son's 2373-3XU. After swapping it out and loading it from the recovery CDs, it's like it was always there.

Now my son has over 60Gb for his music! (And an external 40Gb drive for his videos - I found a USB 2.0 enclosure on the web for $10.00).
