getting Wi-Fi

#1 Post by NoBob » Sat Sep 11, 2004 6:23 pm

Start traveling with my T41 on Monday. Haven't used Wi-Fi yet. I just opened up the Wi-Fi window, and as usual it shows no networks. But it says check that the wireless switch is on. Is there anything I should do to set things up before leaving?

And has anyone connected wirelessly in Bangkok? For free?

Can't help with the free question. But am curious - you have a new, relatively expensive computer and someone is spending a lot of money getting you to Bankock. If you cannot find a place there to connect for free are you not going to use WiFi? Don't you think it would be a good idea to first find out if the WiFi in your unit works when you get there, and then worry about/try to find a less expensive place to log on?

I suppose you would want to make a profile with the SSID set to "ANY".

Intel's (Jwire's) Hotspot finder shows two free hot spots in all of Thailand (never been there myself), and I can't tell what the city is.

If you are in a busy metro area, download and try using netstumbler to locate WiFi signals, it will also tell you if the signal is encrypted.

The first time I tired my wireless capabilities was exactly like you mentioned: I was in a foreign city, so I cranked up everything from FN+F5 and it found several unsecure networks in the near vicinity. When I had an afternoon free on my trip, I wandered around and found quite a few unsecure networks. I guess it's what happens when wireless home networking becomes a commodity: easy to set up, so people just forget about it.

Will be travelling to Thailand, Singapore, Australia and US. Need it for work. Thanks for the tip about the jiwire download. After posting I continued searching and found that one. Didn't find the free Thai hotspots though. The ones I saw were 150 baht per hour. Will look again. Thanks for the tip about SSID. In the jiwire Help it mentions enabling SSID to 'Any'.
