T43 - RAM / CPU running @ optimal speed?

#1 Post by gechu » Sun Jan 21, 2007 8:52 am

Hej

I have a T43 with 768 mb of DDR2-SDRAM, one 512mb and one 256 mb module. When I open CPU-Z I see this:

[CPU]
FSB - 133Mhz
Bus speed - 521Mhz

[Memory]
Channels - dual
Frequency - 266Mhz
FSB:DRAM - 1:2

[SPD]
Cant get any data from here, just some corrupted letters.

1. running DDR2 memory @ 266Mhz can that really be alright?
2. FSB @ 133Mhz sound very very low. This is my first intel system and I´ve read something like this: 133 x 2 = 266 DDR, 266 x 2 = 532 dual channel. But isn´t this dualchannel thing mostly a hype? Can I even run dual channel with these two non-identical RAM modules?
3. Running FSB and RAM 1:1 isn´t that a great thing?

4. Last, is it worth digging into this? Or should I just be a happy owner of a digital typewriter? ;)

Last note, the system is very stable ATM.

Welcome here @ thinkpads forum

First of all I think you should use same spec'ed memory types (PC2-4200 CL4 SDRAM 200-pin non-parity SoDIMM, 533MHz)
Did you check if your CPU is running at full performance or is using Dynamic Switching (right-click My Computer, Properties and see below the value of the processor speed)

Usually you should have 512 x 512, 1GB x 1Gb in order to run memory in Dual Channel Mode (which I think is not your case)

First firstly the specs of both RAM modules to be spec'ed at 533MHz
Current
T440p:
Core i7-4710MQ|8GB RAM|Intel SSD S3700 200GB | 14.1" IPS FHD | Windows 7 Pro, T450 Trackpad, Backlit keyboard, 2nd Caddy
Past: T420 HD+, X61s XGA, T61 14" SXGA+, T42p 14.1 SXGA+, T30, A22e

Your FSB speed is normal, the CPU uses "Quad Pumped" technology, Intels own design for the CPU speed. FSB x 4 = 533 mhz for the CPU although yours seems to be off at 521 mhz.

This same FSB is used for the memory, in the case of 133 x 2 = 266 mhz speed on the memory. Dual channel mode requires both modules to be identical modules for the biggest benefit and from what I've seen on other websites the question is whether or not Dual Channel is providing the bang expected.

The FSB:Dram ratio is correct at 1:2. FSB @ 133, DRAM at twice that. 1:1 would put the RAM at 133 mhz.

Is it worth digging into, I would be curious as to why your only getting 521 mhz for the CPU's buss speed, however if you're happy with the way it's running, go with it.

Hey guys sry for my late reply. But now I´ve done som research and I found this info on my two RAM:s:

512MB 2Rx16 PC2-4200-444-12
HYMP564S64P6-C4 AA, 0527N

================================

(first the IBM label and then the label which was found under the IBM one)
11S38L5138ZJ1WKE57QQEJ
IBM FRU 73P3841 DIMM 2005-07-24

HYS64T32000HDL-3.7-A (infineon)
256MB 1Rx16 PC2-4200s-444-11-C0

Also there must have been something wrong with my first bus speed value @ 521. Because now it´s 532. But i included the CPU-Z log if some deeper info is needed.
