Upgrade from T30 to T41 or T4x?

#1 Post by helmet4000 » Mon Jan 22, 2007 1:36 pm

Hello,
I was thinking of ug from my T30 w/ 2.4ghz and 2gb RAM to a T41 or possibly T4x. I need fast clockspeed on cpu for number crunching and plenty of memory. Does anyone have experience b/w these T30 and T4x series so as to provide insight on making this switch?

Thanks,
Tom

Having had and used both, I moved from a 2.0Ghz T30 to a 1.8GHz Dothan T41 (I did the Dothan upgrade) with 768Mb of RAM (it will take more) and a 7200-rpm hard drive. The 7200-rpm hard drive upgrade is significant in this lot above. While you can get faster (newer, faster T4x), what I have is much faster than the T30, and fully satisfactory for what I do (including running 1 or more simultaneous guest machines while running the XP host machine).

That is my experience, and others will have helpful posts on this, so good luck. ... JD Hurst

If the T30 is using PC2700 modules, then you are in luck because T40, T41 and T42 also use PC2700. However, if you have PC2100 modules, you can't transfer them. The T43 uses PC2-4200 modules, which are incompatible with PC2700 or PC2100. So, if you want to reuse your memory sticks, the fastest T4* machine to upgrade to would be the T42. (Incidentally, this illustrates why even though PC2100 and PC2700 operate at the same speed on a T30, it's better to get PC2700.)

On the other hand, you definitely can't just take out the hard drive and throw it into a T4*, because XP won't boot.
