What DVD Writers are available for T40?

#1 Post by daveycmc » Mon Jan 22, 2007 5:57 pm

Really confused.

Been looking on e-bay for a new CD/DVD Writer as I only have a DVD-ROM at the moment, but I am really confused as all of the ones on E-Bay seem to be for all other thinkpads EXCEPT the T40.

Can someone please list the IBM P/Ns for DVD writers compatible with the T40? Or even point me in the direction of alternative drives as opposed to IBM only ones.

Thanks for all your help.

You should be able to use the following: ThinkPad Multi-Burner Plus Ultrabay Slim Drive - Part number: 73P3342

If you want to find compatible accessories for your T40, start from this page: Find accessories for your computer

Hi, your best bet is P/N 40Y8622, There are a few also on ebay normally. This is the new LG 9.5mm unit, compatible with T4x and curved bezel, faster and better burner than the previous multi burners, which is in fact the same unit T60's are shipping with.

I'd suggest reviewing whether you really need a dvd burner in the notebook at all. I need to burn CDs regularly and I like to read DVDs, so I picked up a combo drive (CDRW + DVD rom).

I rarely if ever miss the DVD burning ability. I have a desktop PC with a dvd burner. Also, you can get IDE DVD drives for ~$30 these days, and then a cheap IDE external USB2.0 case for another 20-30, and it will burn and read faster than the slim drives required for notebooks. I have an NEC ND-3550 (older model) in an enclosure on my desk at work (which is where i primarily use my notebook).

The 40Y8622 runs ~$200 everywhere you look, which is why I suggest maybe trying another route if you don't absolutely NEED to burn DVDs while mobile. :)

I agree with ZPrime. That is the route I took. I bought an external USB 2.0 DVD writer. I can use that writer with all of the computers in the house, as needed.

Davey,

I think you'll find the answer to your question in this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=36758
- thread entitled: "Swapping T60 Multiburner w/ T42 DVD/CDRW".

As far as I know, you cannot use non-IBM CD/DVD-drives in a T4x, owing to the very low height (only 9 mm) in the ThinkPad's.

Best regards,

Johan
