Extreme performance

#1 Post by cklein » Mon Sep 13, 2004 1:09 am

OK, my T42 comes with 1.8GHz CPU, 1.25G RAM.

What I can do is increase the ram to 2G, but that won't make too much difference.

I decidedd that the bottle neck is the harddrive speed now.

I already got a 60G 7200RPM HD. I am wondering is there anyway that I can buy another 60G 7200RPM HD, swap out my DVD, so I can have 2 HD. Then run a RAID 1, dammmmmmmmmm, double the read speed.

Is it possible? Is there such a controller?

The laptop design focuses on portability, never focus on performance. Hopefully, someday, they will realize the performance is important as well.

You don't need a controller - Windows 2003 handles RAID...

You will of course need the 2nd HDD adapter for that:

Windows will not do striping on a laptop. You will have to run a different operating system to do this. :P

You could use a Firewire-Card with an external Raid..there are nice Raid5-Systems ...

what are you doing with the thing?

a laptop is not a desktop... if you need a real workstation, you should've bought a desktop machine. I'm really curious to know what you're doing that a 7200rpm drive and all that ram is "too slow."

cklien:

All the reports I've read is that performance improvement via raid striping is negligable for desktop applications; it's strictly for servers.

Your Thinkpad is maxxed out, dude!

OTO, I'm not happy about the RAM read/write scores on my 1.5GB TP42 23733VU. Does anyone know of any tricks to optimize RAM access? Should I reduce my swap file to a minimal amount?
