Just got my T41p certified used thinkpad

#1 Post by adamvrobinson » Thu Jan 25, 2007 10:23 pm

Hey All,

I am new to the boards, how is everyone! I just got my T41p

my model number is: 2374-GGU

So far I ran the serial number at the lenovo site and it claims it is in warranty until 2008-02-05, and it claims it has a "special bid" three year limited warranty. but the certified used thinkpads at the ibm site claim only a 3 month warranty.

I checked on the lenovo parts lookup and I have the NMB keyboard, but the keys are pretty shiny, and the upper part where the access IBM button and volume buttons are is not the shiny finish... I may want to call IBM to get a new keyboard

my keyboard FRU is 08K5044

The right hand side of the palm rest is VERY squishy and not solid like I was expecting. Are there some screws to be tightened? or do i need to wedge it? Also, on the edge of the laptop, on the right of the keyboard and above the optical drive, the casing is very flimsy, it will flex down to hit the optical drive, is this normal?

I also recieved the unit with a centrino badge, I was expecting the Pentium M badge (I am aware that it is in fact a pentium m processor used in the centrino system) So that must mean that I have the intel wireless mini pci card on this unit, I looked up the parts list and it mentioned the "CALEXICO-B 802.11B WIRELESS MINI-PCI CAR" with an FRU of: 91P7267 is that the intel wireless?

I would like to get the keyboard and the palm rest more solid.

any help or hints for this new thinkpad lover would be much appreciated!

I moved this to the T4x conference, so that you can receive a little more detailed help...

91P7267 is an Intel 2100 as far as I can tell. The easiest way to tell if you have an Intel wireless card is the IBM logo splashscreen during startup. In the top right corner you will see ether a Pentium logo (no Intel wireless) or Centrino logo (Intel wireless installed).

The squaky right hand on the palmrest is because the keyboard is not firmly attached to the palmrest so it is pulled down. Download the HMM and remove the screws only if you're really annoyed by that.

The plastic flexing above the optical drive is quite normal, but I think the plastic which the case is made of is very strong and durable, nothing to worry about

I remember seeing this T41p on the IBM Certified Used Equipment site. Its price was about the same as several T40's (not even T40p's), which could be due to its suboptimal condition.

well that is a good theory, but I also noticed that certain models are clearly marked as (blemished) in the listing title and were further discounted from the normal price.

My used thinkpad seems to be in good shape, I am going to try to tighten some screws etc. I do have the NMB thai keyboard, I need to get the right palm rest more solid though, as currently it is not the IBM quality I expected. Don't get me wrong it is very useable.

Is it possible to put an XGA screen on the T41p? like a whole lcd swap?

why would you ever want to move TO the 15" XGA?

the only reason to get a 15" thinkpad is to go with a higher resolution... and IMO the only resolution worth 15" is UXGA (1600x1200).

If I could go back and do it again, I would've gone with a 14.1" with the SXGA+ instead. Not because i have issues seeing the UXGA (I don't, and I leave the fonts at normal size too) but because I'd rather lose the extra inch of size and .5 pound of weight and gain the extra battery time.
