Swapping T60 Multiburner w/ T42 DVD/CDRW

#1 Post by dclee012 » Fri Jan 26, 2007 12:13 pm

Is this possible? I'm crossing my fingers....

Basically I have a T60 w/ DVD+_R and is not used, so I want to switch it with a T42's DVD/CDRW...

Thanks

Hello friend,

You neither specify what DVD-writer (model) you’ve got in your T60, nor what CD-RW/DVD-ROM is in your T42. I am not quite sure of whether the T42 drive will fit in the T60, but on the other hand I am rather certain that the T60 drive will both fit and work in the T42. If you wish to know all the details, check these links:

In principle this page: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50076
- page named: ”CD-ROM, CD-RW, and DVD drive options - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p” ought to provide information of what drives that can be used in the T42, but the page was last updated on 2004-05-14, so by now it must be WAY outdated!

The most recently introduced DVD-writer for T42’s (hence being the fastest available drive, capable of writing in the most formats) is the ”ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive with Curved Bezel” having IBM/Lenovo Part Number: 40Y8622 (or as FRU: 39T2729), with the burner itself actually being a M a t s u s h i t a UJ-842.

You’ll find specs for this burner at http://www5.pc.ibm.com/europe/products. ... enDocument
- page named: ”ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive with Curved Bezel”.

Note in particular: "Curved bezel aligns with ThinkPad T40, R50 and Z60m Series notebooks..."

On http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-63680
- page named: ”Notebook Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive – Overview” you’ll find further data for this drive.

So, this drive has a curved bezel to fit nicely with the T42’s. In contrast, the T60’s are having a flat bezel, so the drives intended for the T60’s are therefore supplied with a, right, flat bezel!

The flat bezel DVD-writer for the T60’s is 40Y8623 (FRU: 39T2677). To the best of my knowledge, the drive itself (inside!) is completely equivalent to the 40Y8622 (intended for the T4x’). You’ll find data about the ”flat bezel” drive at:

http://www-604.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... 8425094751
- page name: ”ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive - Flat Bezel”

and http://www5.pc.ibm.com/europe/products. ... enDocument
- page name: ”ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive”

Note the text here: "The drive is compatible with ThinkPad T60 Series notebooks..."

Full specs for the flat bezel drive be found at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62441
- page name: ” Document: "ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive - Overview"

Conclusion: The flat bezel drive is not intended for the T42's, but I'm almost certain that the drive will both fit and actually will work perfectly. You’ll just have to decide if you can live with the look! :D Whether the curved bezel drive from the T42 will fit (nicely!) in the T60, that I don’t know… but again; I am ”quite certain” that the drive itself will function, it if fits. Maybe it is possible to swap the bezel between the drives, keeping the curved with the T42 and the flat with the T60? Check it out yourself..

NB: Remember to uninstall the drive before removing it from your system (in Windows XP, Right-click "My Computer", click "Properties", click the "Hardware" tab, and then click "Device Manager". Locate the DVD or CD-drive, and uninstall it before moving it).

Best regards,

Johan

Hi, just a small correction to the very informative post from Johan.
The 40Y8622/40Y8623 come either with a M a t s u s h i t a UJ-842 or a GSA-4083N from LG, both having almost the same specs.

Tried many 9.5mm Ultrabay Slim drives and unless they are somehow defective or damaged, they will work interchangeably with the T4x and T6x (and even with the R5x R6x Z6x X6x).

The only difference is that the faceplate is not quite the same. Functionally they interchange.

Has anyone bought a 40Y8623 and put a curved face plate on it? Does this work?

You can swap the optical drive between a T4x and a T6x, this also goes for the 2nd HDD adapter from the T4X into the T6x. Have done this on many machines since the T60s came out.

Yes I know, but can you install the curved faceplate from a T4X multiburner onto a T6X multiburner?

Probably, if they are from the same make and similar model of drives.

or just leave the flat face plate and use it in the T4x, it is not that noticeable.

Ok, I'll be more specific. I have a UJ-812 (Panasonic) Multiburner in a T4X. The part number is 92P6110. If I bought a UJ-852 (Panasonic) Multiburner part number 39T2851, could I swap faceplates? Can someone with both drives compare screw, button, bezels, and LED positions? Basically anyone with a T4X and a T6X with multiburners could do this comparison quickly. I'd appreciate the time/effort and maybe give you a break on a future parts deal.

... if visually comparing a T42 standard CD-RW/DVD-ROM (FRU 13N6771), or a T42 CD-RW/DVD-RW (FRU 92P6110), against a FRU 39T2850 (T60, T60P, T61, R61, R61E, R61I, X60, X60S, X61, X61S, DVD+/-RW 8x max dual layer, Ultraslim bay drive, with a Panasonic UJ-852) as shown in this image they sure look identical, except for the blue button (and the curved bezel) on the T42 drives versus the grey button (and the flat bezel) on the T60 etc. drive.

Rather than buying a complete (and expensive!!) 39T2850/39T2851 and modifying/mounting it for a T42, it would be interesting (?) if it was possible to get a "barefoot" UJ-852 and mount it in an old CD-RW/DVD-ROM (FRU 13N6771) - the latter must be available for $ 20? Is that possible...?? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to track down a place which sells UJ-852 "barefoot".

Apart from my old T42 13N6771 I also have a T42 CD-RW/DVD-RW (FRU 92P6110) which I would like to upgrade to a DVD-RW (similar to FRU 40Y8622), so please go on, Harry, and let's hear what you end up doing! :-)

Best regards,

Johan

Johan, here's what I was thinking about trying. Find a cheap or broken 13N6771 as you stated. Then get this drive for an HP (or a bare UJ-852) -

UJ-852 based HP drive on EBay

They show up on EBay all the time for $75 shipped or so. Based on your comparison, I'll at least try to get a bare UJ-852 (or one like the HP) and put t4X rails and a curved bezel on it from a cheap 13N6771. If it works I'll post here. It may be some time until I get the scratch to play with this idea though. Thanks for your input.

Sorry to revive this old thread.

I was just wondering if Harryc or somebody else has found a way to change the faceplate. I tried with the DVD burner of my T60p, but I was unable to remove its flat bezel without damaging the drive.

- there is a thread discussing this; see ultrabay form factor - it may contain some useful information/links?

If you indeed go ahead with this, and if you are successful, then you of course always have the option of creating an illustrated "step-by-step-how-to" guide for those of us who are less courageous! :-)

Taking profit of the "revival" of this old topic... Could some one have a look to the new one I just opened and give me some help:
