sort of dead pixels, but not really?

#1 Post by Grrrrrene » Mon Sep 13, 2004 1:39 pm

First of all: don't mind my Englisch, I'm Dutch :P

I bought a IBM Thinkpad T41P 2 weeks ago, it works fine, I really love it. There is only one problem. Immediattely after unpacking it I noticed that there were no dead pixels present (oh joy!), but after a few days and extensive testing there were :(

The strange thing is that one of them only shows up when I run a program named "PixelTest". It shows up black all the time, it's larger than a pixel, more like 4 pixels in a "+" formation. After the test I checked that location, but the pixels worked fine. But that's not all: On my desktop (mainly black) I can see random white pixels (never the same location twice, but mostly only one or two) which turn black after PixelTest. I only see them after the laptop has been turned on for a few hours, so it is running warm inside.

Could this be a problem with the graphics card? I don't think this is a LCD related problem, right? That's good news because that's always a gamble ;)

My dealer is still negotiating On Site Warranty, I really want that because I hate to miss my laptop more than a day, I need it for my study.

If anyone knows what may cause this problem, please help :)

Sure that this "PixelTest" program is trustworthy? In a german notebook forum I read about some kind of pixeltest program which showed at least one dead pixel although the display was just fine.

Try using the webbased ctscreen (c't is a german/dutch computer magazin):
http://www.fnl.nl/ct-nl/ctscreen/index-2.htm (use Kleurzuiverheid)

For the English-speaking:
http://www.heise.de/ct/ctscreen/
Give the java applet some time to load, then click on "Farbreinheit" meaning clarity of color. You can switch trough the colors by using a mouse click and selecting "andere Variante". To leave the program select "Hauptmenu".

Ok, could be that PixelTest is nog trustworthy, that would explain the big black pixel I found when I ran the program. But still: the white pixels on my desktop shouldn't be there and after running PixelTest they are black. There's really something wrong with the GPU, I guess?

Well, try pressing the middle blue mouse button... if they dissapear, look for the thread named pseudo dead pixels... it's the mouse driver (oh joy :D )

I pressed the middle mouse button, the blue one, no changes in dead pixels :) I'll switch off the laptop in a few minutes now, maybe tomorrow I'll be able to work some hours without dead pixels ;)

I think it could be a problem with the GPU. As Grrrrrene said, it only appears after using the laptop for a while, within this time the laptop can heat up enough to create artifacts. (I suppose)

Can you try a cold boot and then run 3dmark for like 1 hour? If the dead pixels then appear (thus not by waiting 3 or 4 hours) you can be almost 100% sure you have a piece of bad ram on your GPU. (Do they also appear if you load no drivers, so if you uninstall the drivers and then reboot?)

Doesn’t sound good :(, but I have happened it once on me.

Good luck, I will keep track of this topic.
