What type of hard drive works for my t41?

#1 Post by smaug7 » Fri Jan 26, 2007 3:50 pm

Hi guys:
I have a t41 2379-DJU and was thinking about a hard drive upgrade. I still have the 40 gig one and was looking at new hard drives from newegg but didn't know which one to get. One main question is that there's serial ATA and ATA-6 and I dont know the difference between the two and what my laptop can handle. I've read from the posts that people recommend the hitachi travelstar http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... x=0&Go.y=0

but i'm also curious if this toshiba one works on my laptop:

any input is greatly appreciated. thanks for the help

You could use most any old ATA (PATA) drive in your notebook.

I would recommend this one:

they have one for less that is "open box," but if it were me, I'd not risk the aggravation on a small savings like that.

I have one of these in my T43, and also one in my X32. They rock

You can use any PATA (ATA-6) disk in your T41. Don't use SATA as it will not fit because the connector & technology is different.
My suggestion is also to get a 7K100, very fastest drive with the leading brand of hitachi, it screams fast

Some of the common drives (like Seagate Momentus) don't support the HPA that your machine uses to store4 the recovery stuff.

are you actually sure of that? I'm not recommending the Seagate as the Hitachi the OP asked about is faster, the state of the art drive that he could buy and not really all that expensive, but what is the evidence for what you state?

If your looking for speed any 7200RPM ATA drive will suffice, they are all very fast. Seagates drive have an 5 year warranty versus 3 years for Hitachi(I think it is 3 yrs). Performance difference is minicule between the drives. But the Hitachi is cheaper so its more popular I have one and I am happy with it.
But if your are looking for a big and reasonably fast drive then http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822148073
this is it. Fastest 5400RPM on the market(Well last time I checked it) and very big.

I think its a question about what are you doing with your TP , playing games and multitasking(Then 7200RPM is the case) but if your are just surfing and running office apps and playing music&videos then I think the big 5400RPM is it that 60GB extra is alot in laptops.

Here is something on Seagate drives. I have tried a couple and they didn't work, but I cannot tell you the models.

Hey guys...thanks for all the help, I appreciate it. I was still wondering what you guys thought of the Toshiba:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822149030
Are they not that great of an HDD maker or what? Everyone seems to be recommending the Hitachis and the Seagates but no one was talking about the Toshiba.
Also, won't running at 7200 rpm drain batteries faster than a 5400 rpm HD? I was looking at the above HD and noticed that it runs at a lower rpm but has a larger cache than most other HD, will this make a huge difference? Thanks again

I don't recall the stats on the non Hitachi 7200rpm drives, but for the Hitachi drives in PATA configuration (as would be used by your T41) there is not a significantly increased current drain vs. a 5400rpm drive. This contrasts to the SATA versions (which won't fit in your laptop) which DO use more juice.

If I were you and if you are going to buy anything other than an "Thinkpad Options" drive from Lenovo, I'd stick to drives that are commonly used by members of this forum, and for which there is a lot of experience. These would include first and foremost the Hitachi drives, which was the sole brand provided by IBM/Lenovo until the last couple of years (IBM sold off/spun off their Hard Drive division to Hitachi), and anything else you see people talking about in these forums.

Thanks Ken for your prompt response and insight, when I do get around to ordering the HD I'll get the Hitachi's.
