Hello all. In searching the forums, I've come across a lot of confusing information regarding the maximum supported resolution while running external monitors through the DVI port on a docking station. To satisfy my curiosity, I decided to try hooking up a 24" LCD through the DVI port to see if the native resolution works. So here is the result:
I was able to run my T42p with a Dell 2407WFP monitor (24" widescreen) at its 1920x1200 native resolution while plugged into the DVI port on the back of my Dock II. I used the most recent version ATI driver downloaded from directly from ATI's website. I hope this information that may help at least clarify one specific setup scenario.

If you run very high resolution (1600x1200 or greater) via the DVI out port on a dock, you'll likely wind up with some form of flashing pixel issue (typically, green ones and in the middle of the screen). It can be a subtle effect, and some combinations of dock, cable, and display do not exhibit the problem at all, but I did have IBM take back a T30 laptop and send me a brand new T40p after I complained. They have since revised the specifications on all of their web docs.

Interesting. The literature that came with my T42p stated that it could not support a 1600 by 1200 pixel image on an external monitor via the DVA connector in the Port Replicator that I use.
However - when I plugged the monitor into the DVI plug, it works just fine at 1600 by 1200. I didn't have any trouble getting it to do that. It sort of makes sense to me that it should be able to run an external monitor at 1600 by 1200, because the laptop screen itself is 1600 by 1200.
Not sure if this information helps you or not.
