Concerns for new T43p

#1 Post by dclee012 » Mon Jan 29, 2007 2:30 am

Hi All,

I just bought my first T43p (owned X's and T's before). I am a little concerned with all the talk about the noisy fan and the hot temperatures... Is this common? Or, are we only hearing from the people with problems?

I have a 3 week old T43 (not "p") and it has no problems whatsoever other than for a barely noticeable stuck pixel far off to the right of the screen. Yours may be a little bit more prone to the fan noise problem given your higher end GPU and faster processor (mine is a 2ghz and has the 64mb X300 card). If you don't have a noticeable fan noise problem, then don't sweat it, just use and enjoy your new laptop. I like my T43 and have no regrets that I didn't spend almost twice as much on a T60, which is what I would have had to spend to get anything faster than what I got.

I have a T43p which is about a month old now.
I bought it lured by the attractive price and only after ordering did I find out about the fan issue.
Do not worry though. Yes, the fan stays on all the time and it can be heard in a quiet environment but it is not an issue if you have a tv running in the same room for example.
When using all the power of CPU and GPU the bottom of the laptop gets noticeably hotter than in my previous R51, but I noticed the battery is kept quite cool nevertheless which I believe is a testimony to some proper heat management in the T.

My wife's T43 (1871) stays around 50C most of the time. The fan doesn't run much, and when it does, it's barely noticeable. I guess we got one of the non-noisy fans....;-)

This is quite strange, even if I have the CPU at 43-45, the fan keeps running all the time. Could this be because of the need to cool down the GPU?

Thanks for the info. I will update with my experience after I have received the unit yet.

CZOLG: On T42, I believe the fan kicks into high speed at 43C. I could be similar in the T43? Btw, which model did you get?

I got the 2668-PEG.
I am not sure when the fan kicks in exactly, but what I read from this forum the reason for it stayng on might be the GPU or Northbridge. The fan has to cool down all the components not only the CPU.
I suggest that you go through this thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=27
This may clear some matters up.

i got a t43 2687-d8u. the fan is always on and it gets really hot on full power with CPU and GPU when i run some games.

anyways, i have owned the t43 for more than a year now. so far, no problem and things have been very good although it would be great without the fan always-on and the pulse noise issue problem and being very hot issue as well.

Yeah, my T43's fan is always on too but doesn't bother me. It's still not as loud as most desktop computers I have used. And when I use the T43 in my office at work, I don't hear it at all because the air conditioner is much louder! People who complain about it are mainly those who need to use their T43's in very quiet environments.

I only notice the fan on my T43 (1875) when I put my ear right up to the vent. Other than that, during normal usage it is pretty quiet/silent. I knew about the fan issue before I made my purchase but to me its a bit exaggerated. I am very satisfied with my T43 after 1 year.
