Hope someone can help. I swapped the memory chips on my T41, there was a 256 under the keyboard and a 512 in the rear, in order to make a future upgrade quicker.
Upon restart all I got was 1 long beep followed by 2 short, looked up the beep error in the HWMM and the 3 possibles are 1-systemboard 2-lcd or 3-DIMM.
I have tried removing and reseating the memory, putting the sticks back in as they were, trying just one in the keyboard slot, it still throws out the error. Im thinking its the mainboard but cannot understand how on earth it could have got damaged.
So, my big question is..................has this ever happened to anyone else???
Regards
Glenn
T41 Dead
I do not think it is the motherboard, although it could be the culprit. The fact that you are getting diagnostic beeps indicates that the board is attempting to access/verify the memory and it cannot do so -- meaning that the motherboard is "working".
I bet if you try different permutations of the two memory sticks in the two different memory slots you will get some satisfaction. Of course, if you have a third memory strip, then the testing is easier.
I know it is unlikely that the two memory strips have "gone bad" simultaneously, but I still bet that the memory is the problem, not the motherboard.
Good luck!

Wow, quick reply, thanks.
I have tried every permutation of stick(s) and slot(s) and it still does the same.
Unless I've got 2 sticks that have both become faulty at the same time during a swap I dont see it being the memory.
Id love it to be the memory, just to double check I may borrow a stick from a friend.

If you removed/inserted the memory while the PC was "suspended", rather than truly powered off, then it's possible you did damage both mem-sticks; or even the mainboard itself.
when I do any kind of hardware swap, I power down, unplug the AC adaptor, and remove the battery. That's about the only way to KNOW that there isn't any power on any bus/connector.
Verify the memory by trying it in a different PC.
hopefully one you don't care much about tho...
