[T43] CPU Upgrade

#1 Post by autologic » Wed Jan 31, 2007 3:07 am

If the answer is a blatant "no", say so :)
So... can I upgrade the Pentium M processor in my T43 to a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo? Actually... to anything faster than 2GHz?

Thanks!

I'm fairly certain that the Core Duos would be incompatible with a T43...only Dothan CPUs with 533MHz FSB and 2MB cache will do you any good, and the highest speed one (which I think is 2.26GHz) probably wouldn't give you as noticeable a boost as a 7200rpm HDD and a full memory upgrade. But if you've already done those, then try the 2.26GHz CPU, but it'll cost you.

Yes you can try this.

You can try that only with a 400 mhz bus processor... does the Pentium sticker on your laptop have any pink or say centrino on it? Odds are then you can't do it. Also I'm not sure any T43's have 400 mhz bus. Use CPUZ to say for sure.

I've spent a lot of time looking into the c2d upgrade. You would need a T60 mobo, and even though the cases are the same size more or less as the T40 series, its just a question if the ports would match up, power issues, monitor connector compatibility, etc. I haven't spent a lot of examining the T60 but I'd imagine it's probably not possible in the need.

You can get up to a 2.26 (780 Dothan) if I'm not mistaken; you won't be missing too much from a lower C2D with a top of the line M anyway, since both processors aren't exactly used all the time on C2D. An added benefit of a T60 board in a T40 would be the 256mb firegl over the 128 mb one in the t43p as well.... ah....

Someone please confirm/deny any speculation here.

In answer to the second part, yes . . locate a Dothan Pentium 2.26 Ghz.

In answer to the first part of your question, blatant answer, "no". Read further for additional explanation.

In answer to your question about upgrading to a CD or C2D, consider for a moment that the T43 cpu socket is a 478/479 mFCGPA. The Dothans are either 478 or 479 pins pokeing out the bottom of the cpu.

Now CD and C2D processors are LGA775. 775 little balls, no pins, totaly incompatible with the socket on a T43 motherboard. Overcome that hurdle and then there voltage issues, FSB issues. Just change the motherboard, then consider the issues with fitting a T60 motherboard in a T43 case considering that the placement of the cpu, and ports have changed.

Guess that settles it.
