t40p stopped working black screen no boot

#1 Post by t40racing » Fri Feb 02, 2007 2:34 pm

Hi, I am trying to fix my friends computer. He was experiencing system slowdown due to some virus/trojan horse infection. After a while he suddenly had the machine not booting with an error message (he doesn't remember what it was). Then a few tries later, it would no longer give the error message. Now, when you turn it on, the fan turns on, along with the battery light and the lightning bolt light next to it. No beeps, no video, it doesn't even flicker. There seems to be no activity. If a monitor is plugged in, nothing shows. Any ideas on what is going on or if its even worth fixing?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I've the exact same problem.

First, does he get any beeps when powering on?

I haven't actually sovled the problem but I can tell you what I do to get the laptop working. First, I push down on the top part of palm rest (apply pressure to the motherboard), then turn on the power button. Once the splash screen appears, I immediately lift my fingers off the palm rest and all should be ok. However, the computer continues to freeze while logged onto the opertation system so, like I said, I have no permenant fix for this peice of [censored]. Anyways, I examined the the computer; slowly taking it apart to identify any issues that could be causing this but unfortunately, no luck finding a solution.

What I have now is a peice of foam on the dvd cage so that, when I tighten the screws down for the keybored, it applys pressure to the motherboard. I don't know what is causing it and It pisses me off to tell the truth because I require the laptop for studies and I can't even get the [censored] thing to work correctly.

Burn in hell.

Check out this thread may be related to GPU having broken solder connections caused by flexing; symptoms and "cure" match what is discussed in this thread...and it has several solutions to try.

KNOPPIX

Well, that doesn't sound good.

However, you might want to try downloading Knoppix, a linux operating system working from a live CD (which means that it will not even touch! your hard drive), to see whether your TP boots up on that. If it does not then the problem is not the virus or whatever but your TP. If it does boot then report back...

After trying the press the cover trick, the machine booted right up into windows Xp without any problem. I am able to use the machine now, but haven't tried the restart or moving it yet.

It is long, but it is worth the read!!! Your TP will be as solid again as when you bought it :)

I had a similar issue with my T43P, I sent it back for repair under warranty (got to love that 3 year warranty) and it's as good as new.
