Missing drives after formatting

#1 Post by adrenalincreek » Wed Sep 15, 2004 10:20 am

Guys,

I used an MS-DOS boot CD to format my hard drive, then put in the CD that has all the folders I copied from my ThinkPad hard drive before I format, and ran WINNT from the /i386 folder. This finally got WinXP installed!

I'm thinking now of upgrading to SP2 before installing any software, but I have two concerns:

1) When I run the ThinkPad configuration tool from the control panel, I see the buttons on the sides of all the drives except the one in the lower right corner. It doesn’t say what that button is used for, instead, it has the text: "Drive not installed" Could someone check and tell me if they have the same thing? Did I miss a drive or something? I can't remember what that button was used for before I format!
The hardware drives under Control Panel -> System ->Device drives doesn’t show that any drives are missing.

2) The wireless networking light at the bottom of the LCD is not as solid green as it used to before I format. It keeps blinking and the transmit/receive rate is generally slower. I remember someone in this forum mentioned that they had problems with the latest 802.11 drive, and that it got fixed when they reverted back to the old drive. Did anybody experience this before? I got the latest drive using the software installer. The previous drive was the one that initially came installed on the machine.

Thanks very much!

For whatever it is worth ... :?

1) I have that "Drivers not installed" on the bottom right of my Thinkpad Configuration too. I just assumed it was something I didn't have..

2) My wireless network light always blinks when connected, with both SP1 and SP2. I had assumed this was normal.

I have the "Drivers Not Installed" Button, but it is all greyed out. So I assume (and Device Manager supports my assumption) that all is well and I have no orphaned drivers or devices.

My Wireless light below the LCD screen is steady if I am doing nothing, otherwise it blinks roughly in time with DuMeter which reports traffic flow. I assume that is normal operation.

yeah...
sometimes its better to live in ignorance.. :D

I did the same.. - and today I found my self checking weather I had a made in china or Thailand keyboard, though I never had any problems (it was a Thai). The worst case were when I came around the fan noise issue. It simple drove crazy after I started to notice the ignoring sound and 5 sec cycle - ended up selling the T40 and got another one that works fine.

Guys, here are some updates on that "missing Driver" button in the Thinkpad configurator. I went through the Help files of the TP configuration program and found that it has info on the following which doesn't seem to already have a button in my case:
-Debug port
-docking station
-ThinkScribe
-flip touch screen
-Midi /Joystick port.
so I think the missing driver button is reserved for one of the above.

As for the blinking WLAN light, I hear ya! I've been monitoring that even more than I'm looking at the LCD! haha But it was definitely mostly green before I update with the latest WLAN driver... I'll switch back to the old driver and see how it goes.
